Here's an old slide/photo I once found online. If I recall from years ago, the photographer was an intern.
In the hi-res PDF attachment, you can even zoom in to read some of the names on the work shirts.

My guess is a fake "porthole" or fake exhaust tip.

Wellllll, I don't like it... ruins that sweeping curve... but they didn't ask me for my opinion. (I likely didn't exist when the photo was taken, so it's kinda moot.)

JC Whitney sold those. That is where I got my $13.00 cut pile carpet that the color ran when wet-which was each time the Vette was washed or in the rain or high humidity or when I touched it or ---
