        Re: Route 66

I don't live in Memphis but do see the news almost every night. Memphis is one of the most dangerous cities in the US, this is a fact by the statistics. Be careful where you go at night.
The news just recently reported that persons with concealed gun owner permits are or will be not premitted to carry their gun when visiting Beale ST.
This does not stop those that carry a gun without the concealed gun owners permit.
Graceland should be safe to visit during the day.

Farther west on your trip on Route 66 in Oklahoma past Oklahoma City you will traveling west towards Clinton, Oklahoma.
If you get off I-40 just east of the city of Clinton you can actually travel the real old Route 66 into the city of Clinton.
I do not know how much this has changed since I have not been to Clinton for several years since returning for a high school reunion. Route 66 was a west/east highway in this area just south of the airport.
Route 66 long ago went right through the city of Clinton. It was widened through the city in the late 50's and was named Gary Freeway. This widened Route 66 portion was a very popular "car crusing route" in the 50 and 60's.
In Clinton there is a Route 66 musuem you might enjoy visiting. They have owner cars in the musuem, so they can change. Don't know how many Corvettes.
Trivia, back in the early 60's Elvis Presely spend the night in the motel that is still located across the street from the Route 66 museum. This was a big event for Clinton, Oklahoma.
Leaving out of Clinton on Gary Freeway to join I-40 going west is the stretch of road from Clinton on I-40 until about five miles west that back in SEP 1964 I outran the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. I stopped and waited for him to catch up. Came to my senses, can't outrun the radio. I was waiting for him at the back of my car. I still have the ticket, 120 MPH, the speedometer was past that.

While you guys are in St. Louis you might want to check out the Triumph grill. It is a pretty good restaurant with a motorcycle museum attached to it. A portion of the museum is open at night, which is the only part I've seen so far. It is cool.

What time do you all plan to be at Ted Drewe's Chippewa? I talked to Kelly Waite (the St. Louis chapter chair), he will put the word out. Hopefully several of us can hook up with you.

If you want to think you are on the moon, stop by the meteor crater in Arizona, off I-40 before you get to Flagstaff. Really a sight to see, 1 mile across, 600 feet deep. Worth the stop, if only for a few minutes. And enjoy the trip. The southwest part of this country is unique and the desert scenes are a show all by themselves.

                          Sander,

So you're coming to the St. Louis area late Sunday night, then passing through on Monday? Are you planning a Ted Drewes's outing?

We plan to arrive in St. Louis coming sunday late afternoon / beginning evening and do some sightseeing!!

Where is the place exactly? You have a website or something on that?

                            Looking forward!

                              Hey Mike,

Sounds cool. Ted Drewe's frozen custard is very good. I used to live three blocks away from one on Chippewa location. I had to move because I was getting too fat. That and I got married. I digress. Anyhow, they have two locations, but the Chippewa one is in a better neighborhood, is on Route 66 and is the original. Here's the address:

                              6726 Chippewa St.
                              St. Louis, MO 63109

                              Here's the web site:

I would like to invite the St. Louis chapter to meet you all as well. Can you pin down the time a little better? I know it's hard when you're travelling.

Also, I mentioned in another post to this thread that you might want to check out the Triumph grill and motorcycle museum. Good food and bikes.
