    Sander,
In St Louis visit the Gateway Arch -- take a ride to the top and see the movie on how they built it.

There is also an ice cream shop on what used to be Route 66, Ted Drewe's http://www.route66university.com/busdir/teddrewes.php

Sander, do a TDB search on "route 66", there was a good thread about this several months back. There's a couple of good books listed in that thread. Also, Michael Andresson (sp?) and his son drove route 66 last year and wrote a nice Restorer article (December 2008 issue?) about their trip. If you're going thru Memphis make sure y'al take in Elvis' Graceland. Best, Gary....

Sander, I drove Route 66 in 2000. I drove all the way across country in a Corvette. 7,400 miles in 3 1/2 weeks. Trip of a liftetime.

I really liked the Kingman Arizona to Oatman Arizona stretch of Old Route 66. It's the longest continuous stretch still in existence. Oatman is a neat old mining town with a saloon and donkeys that roam the streets. Lots of great books to help you plan your trip.

Follow I-40 as you work your way out West and look for the "Historic Rout 66" signs and get off the highway and onto 66.

When you get to the West coast be sure to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur. Great drive. Have fun

                Sander:

This will be a trip of a lifetime! I took it west to LA in 1961 when most of it had not yet been replaced by Interstates.

I'm sure you've thought of this but prowl around Amazon.com...get an updated Route 66 map:

and some guidebooks....reason is so many stretches in the Easten portion dead -end because of road erosion or closed bridges, yet up to that point hold adventure.

Take notes and loads of picture....find oldsters to talk with or direct you to some of the hidden "treasures", many of whom are still alive.

                Enjoy.

                Bill

                  Sander,
Paul mentioned Pacific Coast Hwy 1 and I would urge you to take the 17 Mile Drive in the Carmel/Monterey area. Stunning beauty and wealth in that area with all the big name golf courses, ie Pebble Beach.
                  Rick

P.S. Make sure you take in San Francisco while at the National Convention

                    Sander,

Sounds like a great adventure. For more info, enter "The Mother Road" into yahoo search. There are many excellent sites with lots of good information.

                    Enjoy !!

                      Sander;

I don't believe anyone has asked and maybe it's a stupid question, but what transportation mode will you and your friends be using? First thing that jumped to my mind was that you would ship your Vettes over in order to enjoy the experience to it's fullest, or perhaps rent new Vettes from Hertz, or maybe something more practical like a bus or RV's. I don't see anyone jump up and offer to loan you their Vettes just yet, but that would be cool.

Just thought I'd add some foolish thoughts to a grand plan, as I am sure as you approach it with the anticipation and excitement that such an experience is due.

Good luck and have a blast.

                      Stu Fox

                        Hey Sander,
You will love your trip. As Gary Chestnut mentioned, my son and I did the trip last year. It was the trip of a lifetime. We took 6 days from Chicago to LA, without the detours you are planning (which sound excellent btw).

Do check out our web site. The link is below. There is a blog of our adventure (and it was an adventure!), pictures, recommendations and a link to our Restorer article from this winter.

Don't hesitate to contact me via PM if you have any questions. Let me know when you will pass through Bloomington, Illinois. I'd love to meet up with and drive for a stretch together.

I wish you all the best.

                        Cheers

                            Sander,
I purchased a set of 8 Route 66 maps (one for each state) that are hand drawn and lettered w/commentary. Maps vary in size are well done by Jim Ross (Arcadia, OK) and Jerry McClanahan (Corsciana, TX) and can be seen at www.66maps.com. Bought mine on amazon.com.

                            Enjoy the ride.

                            Best regards,
