    Rust removal

I have an pair of NOS '65 springs with light surface rust, no pitting. Looking for a non-acidic way to remove the rust and leave the surface natural. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mike

      Re: Rust removal

I have removed rust - more than surface rust - from various ferrous metal items with Evapo-Rust. I gotta tell you, that stuff really does a job - the parts came out like they were just cast, a nice medium grey color. Evapo Rust, is not all that cheap - you will probably need a few gallons and it is not toxic - it will not do damage to bare skin -- if you wash it off. Great stuff. If the WD40 doesn't do a satisfactory job for you - try it.

            Gary,

Yelllow tags came on service replacement springs. The standard spring used on the production line had a green tag. For judging, the yellow tags need to be removed and repro green tags installed.

Thanks, the red car will likely never be judged again (already Regional Top Flight), but it can't hurt to change the tag to green. Just not looking forward to doing the spring replacement myself, but with a saggy left spring, time to do it...

If these springs are for a ‘63 or ‘64 with A/C car the tag code is supposed to be 3833319 in black on yellow tag according to the judging manual.

They are for a ‘65 with AC (3851100)

Not sure what the ‘65 manual would say. Tony Stein may know.

                      Re: Rust removal

The green tags with “3851100” and the proper build code (ED) are available today on the repop market, (I have some on my black car) The real tags have a different cut-off serration than the repros, so I’m going to get a set of those and tear them off with a finer-toothed tape serration.
