    Re: 1965 L78 Register

Rob: What's the VIN for your car and What's the VIN derivative on the IF block? Thanks for both.

It's a June made car, right?

They say it was Built Jan 65 and NCRS Judged 2020? Pass side RV Mirror, how do we know its not a put together car? Anyone studied this in detail?

It is a March car, but it falls in that short time period when the Tonawanda stamping would be on the "wrong" side of the pad. Too bad there are no pics of the engine stamp. I wonder if the NCRS judges looked for that unique feature. I guess we never got any pics of the engine stamp on the Bill Mock "first 396" either.

To license the car in Australia left hand drive you have to have both side mirrors. So they had to fit it. They also have to change the headlights so the dip to the left on low beam.

The Vin indicates it was a May 1965 build.

Head light aim of 2 degress to the left verus 2 degress down and right in the US should have been easily found with the adjustments in the old systems, much less the tollerances.

Where what this car originally sold - USA?

If this is the car for sale in Australia we are speaking of, it would be a very early 396 built in late March, not January or May. Its vin is advertised as #13762 and the last car built in March 1965 was #13936.

I have a rubbing from the engine pad of #13961. The engine was an early build T0313IF with the Tonawanda stamp on the right hand side of the pad (like a small block and 409) and the vin stamped over top of the Tonawanda stamp. This was a situation that only lasted for a few weeks until the Tonawanda plant changed it stamping practice to make room for the St Louis VIN stamp. That is why engine pad pics of #13762 and earlier cars would be so interesting to see.

We have 279 L78’s on the Register now. Of these, 5 are engines only.

Here's another, VIN 19479, a black/black coupe found in Volume 29, number 49, page 45 of NCRS Restorer, Spring 2003 issue. The Restorer only shows Shipper Copy of a '66 red on white, base engine convertible, on page 44, yet. Something is screwed up, but a photocopy I took of the car shipper copy of the L78 looks legit. Edit as you wish.

I agree, Silver on Black is a very nice color combination. Andrew, post up a pic or two of your Coupe when you can.

The description in the lower left under HISTORY needs to be updated. Sounds like it was written by a used car salesman. Has inaccuracies like "Another rare option for this car was that it came with 4 wheel disc brakes."
