Re: POST OLD PICTURES of CORVETTES HERE - NOSTALGIA

              My mistake on the date.
Saturday OCTOBER 13, 1962 was the RIVERSIDE GRAND PRIX.This was the 3 hour warm up race prior to the big race.

DOUG HOOPER was the big winner that day. The car was entered by MICKEY THOMPSON, and was ''flown'' to Burbank from Michigan on Sept. 27, 1962. So the team of DOUG and DON MELINE , who also was a So Cal Club Corvette 1960 racer, and MICKEY had 10 days at the Riverside tract to test. The MACDONALD, BONDURANT and GRANT cars were all ''driven'' from St. Louis to California during this time.

The Daytona Blue Hooper car tested many brake combinations of material from Chevrolet [ Delco ] and Bendix and Raybestos. Pyrometers were attached to each wheel and the in car temp reader was attached to a special bracket where the glove box was. Different drums and brake linings were changed during the 10 hour daily tests.

Tha crew also discover that on the WOT long 1 mile back straight that the engine developed coil bind in the valve train that caused broken valve springs. So the decision was made to install a 3:36 positraction in place of the 4:11, and to limit RPM to 6000.

''LET'S SAVE THE MOTOR, AND FINISH THE RACE'' was the strategy . Enjoy these copyright DAVE FRIEDMAN photos now owned by Ford Museum. THE LAST color photo is of DON MELINE, DOUG and DICK GULDSTRAND and Me in 2006.

This 1960 was purchased new by Don Hoskins of Iowa.

The story is here courtesy of the Daily Herald a Chicago area news paper.

Jim, great photos and a great recap. It must have been a thrill to watch these newly hatched '63's race.

My life has been blessed to have known racers like Dick Guldstrand, Doug Hooper, Jim Jeffords and Joe Freitas well.

In 2009, Doug and I left California in my van and ''drove'' back to Michigan where we spent 3 days with an old GM Engineer great friend who today owns the Bill Krause 63 Z0-6 tanker Mickey Thompson car that raced Daytona. The standard Z0-6, NOT the Mystery Motor car. We had a great visit and it included a trip to the ''WIND TUNNEL'' at the tech center.

On day 3, we all drove to CARLISLE 2009 and enjoyed the 5 year RACE CAR REUNION, with drivers and cars from the ''GLORY DAYS''

Then Doug and I drove to Kentucky to the Corvette Museum for the annual HOF Induction dinner. This year TONY De LORENZO and JERRY THOMPSON were inducted and we sat at their table. 2 1/2 days later we arrive back in California. 18 days, and 6230 miles. Many Many Corvette stories with some of the great race ''heros'' of the 50's and 60's.
