    Jack------

    The engine suffix code is one very important factor. As you've found, it should be "CTV" if it's an original ZR-1.

    The aftermarket A/C indicates that the car never had factory A/C, which is another good sign.

    Other things to look for:

    No radio with factory block-off plate and no antenna (plus, no evidence of there ever being an antenna hole);

    GM #3007436 aluminum radiator;

    "Dual pin" front calipers with caliper reinforcement brackets (easily seen looking under the car).
    In Appreciation of John Hinckley

        Thanks Joe, I'm just getting ready to head out to do my Sherlock Holmes routine. Those points will be very helpful. I also want to thank you for helping me years ago to identify the 61 315 HP fuelie I now own. Maybe with your help I will get lucky again!

                Re: 1970 ZR1

                This is usually about the point where the rats begin leaving the woodpile...one incisive question and all the hearsay testimony goes right out the window. The reason Terry says to be skeptical is that the common reference of installed option quantities makes no mention of ANY ZR1 packages being sold in 70, but another says they were definitely made, and lists the heavy duty components installed with the package...however, neither are quantities listed in this second reference. No doubt, they were sold to only a few customers with genuine racing purpose, so better be careful...I'm doubtful that Chevy sold any ZR1s to little old ladies for their son.

                One quick, but inconclusive, way to check the car will be look at the center cluster for an original factory radio delete cover plate. No radios were installed on ZR1s, and I'm sure when you ask about the presence of the aftermarket radio and the current whereabouts of the factory delete plate, smoke is going to fill the room.

                You'll have to get the car on a lift to check the stamp on the passenger side of the transmission main case near the tail extension. There should be two stamps adjacent to each other; one will be a VIN derivative with the serial number of the vehicle. It should match that portion of the VIN with no signs of restamping or alteration. The second stamp will be of the format P0A12C, where P means Muncie four speed with aluminum case, 0 is the last digit of the model year, A is the month of manufacture (A=January; for your car, the month may be T for December), 12 is the day of the month, and finally, C, where C=heavy duty M22 transmission.

                Unfortunately, this still will not be conclusive because transmission parts could have been changed. You are not likely to be allowed to check for grooves on the input shaft (none on M22) because that would require transmission removal.

                    Thanks, Jack. Aren't those guys---Dick, Kelly, and Joe---great? I love the NCRS tech board.
                    I urge you to visit the 1970 Corvette Registry and use the Resource and Research items for help. If you decide to buy the car join up!

                        Hi Scott,
                        Actually I have had nothing but great experiences with all the people that contirbute to the NCRS. I thank you for your timely suggestions and I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming meet at Oldtown, Orlando, in January.

                        Regards,

                        Jack

                                Hi Scott,

                                Yes I will. I found out some more positives and negatives to the ZR1 hope. Still have not seen the engine yet. The guy who has it in storage is out of town. The car has the brakes spec'd. not the radiator. Maybe a replacement. Did other versions of the 1970 have the metal fan shroud? This one has it. Thanks on the 1970 site. I've got it on my favorites already.
