    Re: 1970 ZR1

    Hi Scott,

Yes I will. I found out some more positives and negatives to the ZR1 hope. Still have not seen the engine yet. The guy who has it in storage is out of town. The car has the brakes spec'd. not the radiator. Maybe a replacement. Did other versions of the 1970 have the metal fan shroud? This one has it. Thanks on the 1970 site. I've got it on my favorites already.

It could be that the original radiator was replaced when the aftermarket AC was installed. Check around that storage to see if any other parts for it are stored there. Ask the owner for any documentation he/she has.
To the best of my knowledge the ZR-1 was the only one with the metal fan shroud. Take in mind that there are only 25 of those ZR-1s reportedly built so be pessimistically optimistic.

          Jack-

I am fortunate to own a July 1 built ZR1 coupe that is not restored and retains 98% original components. In researching the authenticity of the car, I found there are a few very specific component dates, markings and other similarities found on authentic ZR1's that appear to be common between these cars. These are details only those who really know or own a ZR1 would be able to relate.

If this proves to be a real '70 ZR1, based on the very early VIN, I believe this could be the first ZR1 produced - or very near to it.

Feel free to email me if you'd like to exchange information. C2@Corvettes.com

Hello, 1970 4 speed base cars without air (3155316 radiator) use the metal fan shroud. My base engine 70, 4 sp, no AC has it. The same use by ZR1.

              Best regards from Argentina

                  Jack------

The round, metal fan shroud was used for 2 applications for 1970:

                  1) base engine with manual transmission and without C-60

                  2) ZR-1

If the car has the J-56 brakes, that's a very good sign. They could not be ordered separately for 1970; they were only available as part of the ZR-1 package. Of course, they could easily have been added to the car later.

The really important thing is going to be the engine suffix code on an original-configuration stamp pad.

Thanks for the information, Roberto. I wasn't aware of that and after doing a bit of quick research I stand corrected. All this will help Jack determine what he's looking for. Without that engine information and other ZR-1 characterstics he is looking at a base 1970 Corvette convertible.

Although your message was not encouraging, I appreciated the info, especially coming all the way from Argentina. It's info I needed.

                              Hi Scott,
Thanks for keeping up with this adventure. I have not gotten to see that motor yet. I hope to in the next couple of days. Also I will go by to look at the car again. I understand there is sometimes a build sheet on the gas tank. If that is so how would I get to it and where on the tank should I look for it. I will definately look around the storage location when I get there for any additional evidence. I'm trying to talk to the original owner. She lives in the area and perhaps has something I can use or will remember details about purchasing the car.

                              Regards,

                              Jack Alexander
