    1970 ZR1

    Another "Found in Barn" Story. Earlier today my friend who ownes a boby shop told me someone came by his shop trying to sell him a Corvette that his mother had given him 20 years ago. It has literally been in a barn for the past 20 years. this is where I need help. I went by to look at it and did some research and I think it might be a 1970 ZR1. I am trying to verify it. I do not know much about the C3's mostly into C1 nd C2's but this looks interesting. The vin # is 194670S402080. The body tag shows it to be the original 984 Daytona Yellow with the 400 black interior. The tag also shows a A28 designation but I don't know what it means. It has soft and hard top with AC. The transmission is a M22. I will get the Engine ID tomorrow. It is in another location. Is there anything else to look for to confirm ZR1? The car needs to be totally redone. Being I do not kow much about the C3's if it proves to be a complete ZR1, is it worth restoring? I think I can get it for a very good price. Thanks,

    Re: 1970 ZR1

    A28 = January 28 of 1970.
    If it is a ZR1, it is worth restoring but please be skeptical. Everyone wants to find the low production vehicles, but few do. It might even be worth restoring if it turns out to be an LT1.
    How do you know the transmission is an M22?

            From the 1970 Corvette Registry:
            The ZR1 included the LT1(350ci 370hp) Engine, M22 Transmission, heavy-duty power brakes, transistor ignition, special aluminum radiator, and special springs, shocks, and front and rear stabilizer bars. ZR1's also had metal fan shrouds. The engine suffix code stamped on the front engine pad for a ZR1 is CTV.

                1970 with the LT-1 or the ZR-1 options did not have AC available as an option.

                    Thanks, Dick. I overlooked that one. The description included the reference to AC which was right there a dead give-away that it is neither an LT-1 nor a ZR-1. If the guy saw hood trim unlike on the small block hood it could even be an LS-5. Regardless, it being a 1970 convertible it might be worth restoring. This coming from a 1970 Corvette owner.

                        I do not know for sure yet. As I mentioned I just found it yesterday. How do I find out if it is an M22?

                            Thank you Scott Kelly and Dick. I found most of the info you mentioned in the corvette "Black Book" with the exception of the M22 info. Regarding the Air Conditioning it appears to be an aftermarket system in that it is labeled "Igloo". Pretty obvious right. I will be looking at the motor later. It is supposed to be wrapped in plastic after being rebuilt years ago and never installed. I guess what I was looking for was any other important indicators as to its ZR1 identity and as to whether it was worth restoring.It has alwys been in Florida with no rust issues at all. All the owners are still alive and in the area. As I mentioned the engine may alredy be done with only it's being seized due to lapse of time as a factor.

                            Thanks again,
