    Re: PV tips

I would try to leave your car outside somewhere safe for the night and run through the practice PV at 8am when the car has been covered in dew and moisture. Some things might act up that have never had issues before. Also, if you typically test things in the morning when the engine is cold, run through the PV test at the middle of the day when the car has reached operating temps.

I drove the car 250 miles to my last PV and passed with flying colors. A few people gave me some crazy looks when they heard I drove the car for a PV, but have driven about 2000 miles since and plan to keep driving the car. Really wishing I didnt need the points from the 45 year old goodyear bias, the drive to Bloomington and Nationals would be a good one.

    Good luck

      Re: PV tips

If you can get there a day early, drive the car around a little. The ride in the trailer never does a car any good. Also I would bring a spare pair of wiper blades, check your pattern and chatter....Also check for any leaks and check front steering linkage for any noises when car is not running, turn wheels back and forth listening....You might be required to do some "Figure 8's" for posi chatter....You can get one of your friends over to go thru the manual with you....Good Luck!!!....This is the best experience when you pass......My wife thought I was nuts going out in the shop @ 10pm to check the dimmer on the dash lights...Well worth it....P..

        Re: PV tips

Thanks guys for more good advice. I am on the Road Tour, and plan to trailer the car to the Last Night Out hotel, but drive it in the next day to the convention center. Since it is a "Year of" car (and will be on display after PV in that area) I guess they will want us up front in the parade in. I am planning on some 70-80 mile drives next week to get really ready and going through everything numerous times.

If you have your idle speed/mixture setup for 7000 feet, it's going to idle higher/leaner at 1000 feet, so with the car fully warmed up go through the idle speed/mixture adjustment procedure in the service manual, which you should definitely bring with you.

          It's a two minute job!

Sounds like a great way to do it, Michael.

You can never check things too much. I once saw a car pass a quick check of lights and switches in the trailer before unloading only to have the wipers fail the next day when the PV began.

But things can go the other way also. I helped a chapter member do a check for Founders ops after he was parked at the convention. Everything worked except the key buzzer. He finally gave up saying that he could afford that one deduction. The next morning he opened the door, inserted the key, and heard the buzz. He scored 100%.

            Good luck.

Thanks for the reminder Duke, I think I have adjusted the idle jets for my place after I got the car to get the idle good. I will re-adjust those when I arrive in the low country. And I will also make sure I recheck the fast idle settings as well after I adjust the idle jets. Appreciate the good catch Duke!

                Michael,

Just be DARNED sure that if you are checking the trip odometer prior to the PV test that you MAKE SURE that the knob is pulled all the way back down while the car is stationary, such that the gears are fully disengaged. The gears inside the trip odometer are VERY small, and can be stripped out very easily. Never touch the trip odometer knob while the car is moving.

                Good luck!

                  Hey Michael,
Just remember that after you pass PV, you can take a break and do something less strenuous... like Air Traffic Control.
                  Good luck!

Also, make sure your battery is FULLY charged before leaving, and you might even bring a spare!

Don't check the headlight motors with the car OFF, you might kill the battery (ask me how I know).

Between now and then, I second the recommendation to just drive the car. Make sure you don't have any rattles, squeeks, or wind noise around the glass.

                      Good luck!
