The blueprint for 3764318 specifically calls out "No holes in the outer ring" ie, you may remove metal for balancing but do not put a hole in it.

thanks Loren and Rich; that's a relief. Yeah DD knew what it was for. I'll call him anyway to be sure. I just figured it needed to be there, based on your original Rich...

        Ian -

The device has nothing to do with balance of the crankshaft or of any other component - it's a harmonic damper, designed to minimize a specific range of crankshaft torsional vibrations. The damper itself must be neutral-balanced, thus the occasional drill impression on the face of the inertia ring.

          Thanks for clarifying that John.

Ian, you said you got yours from a old Chris Craft 283. What year and model was it?
They also had many optional engines in the old mahogany boats in the 50's and 60's.

Reason I ask is I have a buddy in NH that has a pile of old boat engines in his barn, some are 283's.

yes, thanks John! Rich: I bought them off eBay. Seller said it was a 64 Connie for what it's worth.

Ah.....A Continental, a cool boat. I restored one like it about 10 years ago, but it was the 'base' version, simply called "Ski Boat".. Found a few pics on the net of a Connie.....

Also found a cool cabin cruiser, model name...........Corvette!

If anyone is interested, this is what the 64 Chris Craft "Connie" GM 283 balancer core looked like before machining and was 7" diameter if memory serves...

I looked at the eBay balancer posted above and it appears correct 3764318, very rare high HP 1959-1960 270 & 290HP part. I looked quite awhile for mine, they are difficult to find. One I saw a couple of years ago on eBay I bid on but gave up on, it sold for $1600!! The current eBay item is at $200. Photos of mine below.

Guys, I was looking at the pictures of the one that is currently on eBay and it appears as though there is a chunk of material missing at the edge where the two balancing holes have been drilled. What effect would this missing material have on this working correctly? Thanks.

Loren, I was watching and thought about jumping in at $400.....don't need it anymore and would rather someone who needs it get it. Thanks for the heads up though?
