Bill------
I've got a couple of these NOS half shafts but I can't get at them right now. I tried but I've just got too many of those group 5 tote bins and they're ever so heavy. In any event, shot peening produces a rather dull finish on the shafts, with VERY SLIGHT "indentions". It is WAY easier to restore the finish on a shot peened halfshaft than an original, non-shot-peened type (which, for all practical purposes, cannot be restored to exactly original finish condition). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 65 BB axle shafts .
Bill -- these aren't new, nor are they restored. The one on the right (with remnants of white paint) is off my late 396. In the 2nd shot, the left shaft is off the 396. The other shaft is off a '64 with low miles; taken off the road about 1968. You can see the "blueing" of the heat-affected weld zone (both along the seam and around the flange).
Shot peening eliminates the blueing.

Re: 65 BB axle shafts .
Bill, there is a source for half shaft shot peening in the St. Louis area. You should ask Randy or Kent. They can direct you to who can do that for you. Jim is correct--shot peening removes the bluing at the tube/yoke welds.
Notice in Wayne's photo the obvious signs of factor blackout--a feature that will be documented and discussed in the upcoming 6th edition of the '65 JG. I'm glad to see restorers who are blacking out chassis parts on '65 and earlier C2 restorations.

Re: 65 BB axle shafts .
Generally, there will be more chassis blackout on under car exhaust cars. However, I would expect to see blackout on front chassis sections. Any evidence left of blackout on your front sway bar?Region VII Director (serving members in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas).

Re: 65 BB axle shafts .
If you guys find out who this is, please post it here. I would be interested in having this done, too.
Thanks,

Re: 65 BB axle shafts .
That blackout is minimal! Most people who are "waving the blackout flag" are bringing cars to the judging field with the suspension components completely coated in blackout paint! Some with strange methods blacked out 1/2 shafts with natural hardware attaching them to the rear end. Blacked out rear end housing with natural axle flanges, etc. I see more rust on that 1/2 shaft than black out material. GREAT PHOTOS!!! Thanks for sharing.- Top
