Hi Bill
Here is pictures of an NOS 1/2 shaft. Then I had an NOS 1/2 shaft that had some surface rust then I restored that.
I also restored my 1/2 shafts including the bluing and my drive shaft. Not shiney and looks just like an original finish.

The original GM half shafts, GM #3832044, were NOT shot-peened and were used in PRODUCTION only for small block applications. In March, 1966 these were discontinued from SERVICE and replaced by the GM #3872908, the big block, shot-peened half shaft. The GM #3832044 was used in PRODUCTION until 1974, but it was not available in SERVICE after March, 1966. I suppose GMSPO felt it was more efficient to stock only the big block half shaft which could be used for all applications.

Hi Bill
The NOS Big Block ones I had were shot peened, I even have an NOS small block and as Joe mentioned not shot peened.
It was fun restoring them as I had built a system to restore them. I should start a restoration hobby business...ha ha maybe not, its just a hobby.
