    New NCRS member introduction

Hello everyone, My name is Scott Fetgatter and I live in Tulsa, OK. I have been married to my beautiful wife for 23 years and I tell you this to begin my story. I have been telling her for many years when our kids where grown I was going to buy a 2 seat car nobody but her and I could ride in, last September I bought the car, a 1978 Corvette. I had no idea what I was doing but bought the car cheap and knew if I put my mind to it I could figure out how to restore it and take her out for some fun times. Without going into great details, I pulled and rebuilt the NOM engine, scraped the car down and painted it....Ugh! Did I mention when I started the process all I knew how to do was change the oil, batt and alt? Got it all done from November to May in my garage by myself and help from another forum it all went perfect. Jump ahead 3 months and now I have got a serious problem, I enjoy working on them as much as driving them. One day while looking at Craigslist, I found a 1973 I just had to have so long story short, I put the 78 up for sale, sold in 2 days and drove straight to pick up the 73....Now I have another project!!!! The reason I made the change was I bought the 78 long distance under the understanding (I knew nothing then)it was an original car and when I had it shipped to me much to my surprise it wasn't, this had bothered me every since and I love the profile of a 73. Now, I am really having an OCD problem... HAHAHA This car is very original and had been sitting since 1985 basically untouched. The first thing I did was rebuilt the PS control valve and cylinder, replaced the front calipers and did some maint to get it driving. The car runs and drives great, not rattles or even squeaks. I began to inspect the different areas of the car and keep finding how much of a real gem I have found. No major rust to the frame, body mounts look great and heck I even enjoy listening to the factory stereo that still works. At this point I have pulled the rear diff for rebuild and keep wondering if this car should really be restored to factory specs? My problem is I have no idea how to do that and I really want to be driving this car ( I know, I know) by next Spring. A mentor would be awesome hahahaha I am really excited to be a part of the NCRS and look forward meeting some in person and many through this site. Sincerely Scott Fetgatter

Congrats and welcome to the NCRS. Join your local NCRS chapter there in Tulsa, they are fantastic bunch of people. Also buy the books availible here at the NCRS bookstore, good info you must have. The 73 Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) and the 73 Judging Guide should be your first purchases.

Scott, Now that I read this post as well as your other thread regarding paint the question I have is - Does it need to be restored, or are you better off leaving it alone? Many an original car goes down the path of no return due to an overly enthusiastic new owner. Any chance you can post some pictures so we can have a look?

Welcome to the NCRS. This is a great bunch of guys and gals who can be a real help. We are hosting a regional flight judging event in Frisco, TX just a couple of hours down the road from Tulsa. It is 17 to 19 October. Why not try to come down for even just Friday or Saturday and meet some people and see what the whole judging process is about. You can meet a boat load of '73-'77 folks who can answer a lot of your questions in person. We have several registered for judging. You don't have to register for the event and can pay $5 at the door to come in. A great opportunity and there is a great shopping mall next door for the Mrs. if she does not want to talk cars.

                  Bob

Scott, that's a nice car with a lot of potential. I think the frame looks like it's an easy restoration candidate too. Good luck with the car!
