    Re: New NCRS member introduction

    hi Scott,
welcome to a great organization. these are a great group of guys here always willing to help. i speak from experience from joining a couple years ago. i have had some great mentors that are passionate about these cars.
i happen to know of a VERY ORIGINAL 73 that was bought new and still in the possesion of its original owner with just 25,000 miles. all original with only battery and tires replaced but he still has them!!! its a great car with a cool story. he even got to drive it off the delivery trailer when it arrived at his indiana hometown. his name is Curt Stucky. he is a great guy and i'm sure he would be willing to share pictures with you. look him up in the members directory. he has been a member for a long time.
i hope to see your car sometime. you sound like the right kind of passionate member NCRS needs.
    take care,
    Matt

      Re: New NCRS member introduction

      Hey Matt,
Thanks for the welcome and sharing the story, I am very excited about this build. I spoke to the local (Tulsa, Ok.) NCRS chapter and plan to go to there meeting this Saturday.
If you look early in this thread, I posted some pictures of the 73. Tonight I finished cleaning and started painting the rear end crossmember. I bought some brush on, black satin Rustolium. I will know on a few minutes how much I like the sheen, I think spraying it on would certainly be a lot easier. I plan to have the frame from kick ups back done over the next week.

        Re: New NCRS member introduction

I did a little work tonight, cleaning on the fiberglass underneath and painted the diff crossmember and spring plate. Any advice would be much appreciated!
I used Rustolium brush on paint, satin finish. Is the sheen and color ok for judging is my question here?

please remember your feedback will not offend me good or bad!
Next is the back of the storage comparent bins. I just cleaned but have a question. If you notice, the back plate has rivets and screws, is this correct? I also noticed every where there is a rivet, there is a scar on the fiberglass above it.

Also is the plate suppose to be painted same as the frame?

          Re: New NCRS member introduction

The plate is supposed to be painted, but painting that without getting the rivets really turns this into art.

The spring plate was originally dipped in black paint. You might want to research how the original finishes were applied before you paint an item. It's not tough to replicate dip painting at home.

            Re: New NCRS member introduction

            Scott,
Welcome to one of the best, and most anal, car clubs around.

Slow down. I suspect you are going at your car a bit too fast, and you will come to regret it. The spring plate was dip painted originally, and I suspect an anal judge will discern that you used a different technique and deduct for it.

The screws and rivets are correct for your storage compartment hinge assembly, and the marks above each rivet are also correct -- leave them alone. The plate you show that is on the underside of that hinge assembly was originally dip painted black. There is no way you can duplicate that finish without dissassembly, and that doesn't look that bad to justify that effort. From the looks of that part your undercarriage was not that bad, and refinishing all those pieces may have been counter productive.

You need to learn about NCRS judging principals before undertaking the kind of task you are doing. I hope part of the Oklahoma Chapter meeting is about that subject. If not ask them, and tell them I told you to ask. Explaining those principles is y job, but keyboarding is not my favorite past time. Perhaps someone from that Chapter will be willing to look at your car and offer some advice. They have a huge depth of experience there. You will be in good hands. Our first motto is, or should be: "Do no harm."

Edit add: I am surprised no one has responded to your question about continuing threads. It is the custom here to begin a new thread on each subject. The reason for that is these threads become permanent (more or less) part of the archives and someone searching for a specific topic about their 1973 can more easily find the information and advice you have been given if that is not posted in the depths of a thread welcoming you. Of course that also requires the thread starter to mention the year of the car that is the subject of the thread, but that is almost a whole other discussion.
            Terry

Wow! I never thought about something being dipped and you could tell. I guess I will need to order maybe a judging guide before I proceed or is there online resources I can find the information?

I kind of thought the rivets weren't painted.
              Thanks Patrick!!
This kind of guidance is exactly why I joined.

                Re: New NCRS member introduction

Good morning Terry and thank you for responding.
All things came to a screeching halt after hearing about things being dip painted and I hope the mistake with that piece can be overcome.
I certainly understand what you are saying about multiple posts with the year of the car in that post for future newbies to learn from and will accommodate the customary procedure.

I am curious if you could expound on the undercarriage part and being counter productive? When I read that it sounds to me as though you are saying nothing needed to be done? I am under the thought that for a car to be judged it needs to appear as it did the day it left the factory and that is what throws me by the statement.

When I spoke to the local chapter chairman he did say they were going to have a segment going over judging in the meeting this week and I am really excited to be involved.

                Thanks
                Scott

True. However, you need to understand how the scoring system works to know where to "cut your losses" so to speak and where to focus your energy. You can get a lot of credit for parts that look 40 years old and used.

Ok, is there a place I can order and download the information online or do I have to just order a copy to be mailed to me?

The best thing to do is to order the Technical Manual and Judging Guide from the NCRS Store in Cincinnati. You can also download the score sheets from this web site. Try to go to several chapter and regional meets to see other '73's so you can see how other cars appear. It is especially good to see what are called Bowtie cars. These are original cars that have never been restored. You can't beat seeing the real deal from the factory.

                        Scott,
dont let condition scare you. i am lucky enough to own a bowtie 66. whenever i took it for flight judging it got a lot of condition points but having correct parts the way they installed them from the factory outweighed the negative condition points and the car still received top flight. that may something for you to consider also. good luck to you. you are in the right place. the guys here will take care of you and your car.
                        take care,

Man! I have a lot to learn in a short amount of time, I hope to find some advice at the meeting. I use to be in ministry and now am a new small business owner. I have always believed in mentoring people so maybe I will find a mentor to help me through this process....

                            HI Scott,

When I started and the guys explained dip painting I started to clean the parts up and tried to leave a lot of the original drips in place. The thick paint preserved the metal very well since it was so thick, so once cleaned up I used a spray can to paint and the original drips are still original. It is also easy to hang the parts on wire to paint and make your own drips

                            Hope that helps.

Welcome to the NCRS. I would encourage you to join the Oklahoma chapter and get to know the guys. They are great. The chapter meets the first Saturday of the month at 8:00 a.m. at a little restaurant just up the street from the Goodwill headquarters in Tulsa. It has a model train theme. I'm a member of the OK chapter and can vouch for the guys. Also, join us at the regional in Frisco. What a great way to learn and observe.
