1963 brake drum/ backing plate paint

Part of my brake job will be to clean and paint the drum and plate. Does this require a high temperature tolerant paint? My car is gently driven on short trips, less than 50 miles usually.

    Richard -

The drum exterior and spindle side of the backing plate didn't get any high-temperature paint - just ordinary black chassis paint, applied at Chevrolet-Warren.

Thanks John, I had a hunch that Chevy did it that way, both at Warren and St. Louis.

Yes and Yes however caution here - if black you will get an 20% originality deduction. Couldn't help myself. End of comments.

          Alan,

What would the deduction be for?

The new JG calls for the standard backing plate and drum to be semi-gloss black.

Ok, thanks Mike. That's close. The entire brake/spindle assembly was coated with a form of chassis black for 63-64.

Not the brake shoe side of the backing plate though.

Thanks Alan, my car is, and probably always will be a driver. I try to remain faithful to originality as I do my maintenance but nothing short of a frame-off restoration would make this one suitable to be judged.

Sorry for digging up an older thread. Do I understand it correctly, that the brake/spindle assy was assembled bare (spindle, steering arm, backing plate with brake shoes installed, hub and brake drum) and then painted as an assembly? And therefore areas shielded by other parts did not receive coverage (area on backing plate behind spindle)?? This would mean that the wheel cylinder and shoe retainers were coated black as well, correct?
                    Any clarification is greatly appreciated.
