Good catch Rob. I now see that the upper bar of the 5 is in the shadow of the threaded plug. However, this 5 is not the five typically seen on Tonwanda engines. The usual Tonawanda 5 is wider. However, I agree with your conclusion that a matter of this much importance to Don is worth a paid opinion.
Considering the information about the rear end and the the J-56 brakes, I would guess that this is a real L-72 car with the block restamped in a pretty good but not perfect manner. I hope Don gives us some feedback if he gets an opinion from Al Grenning or buys the car and takes the head off.
