Lift up the hood of an unrestored vette. To me it is beautiful. It can only be original once. As far as the judging sheets go, it is lots of 1 and 2 point deductions.

      Roy,
I have started the judging process. That is where some of this came up. And thank you for the advice. I will try my hand at a survivor rather than flight judging on my 72.
I do, now, understand the idea of what "Originality" means. Basically it sounds like a better term might be" How close to original" I get that is what the translation is, but it is very misleading.

Part of the reason I throw these things out there like this is not to upset people. It is to get the information out there. We were eight guys sitting around asking these questions. It came up because I mentioned my intent on heading tward judging. There was probably 150 years of Corvette ownership at this table. None of us understood this stuff.

I brought it to the forum, not just to help myself, but to get it out there so the average NCRS member might have a better understanding as well. So, my intent was to inform, not frustrate.
      Thanks guys.

I’m not frustrated I just understand why you don’t get it. You have not participated or even read the manuals according to your comments and questions, enough said.

For the record “Survivor” is a trademarked name unassociated with this nonprofit hobbyist group. Bloomington Gold a for profit organization offers that award It requires at least a 50% original vehicle in three of four categories where they have no manuals and have no published judging guidelines that could be a 37.5% car if thats your definition of original and it floats your boat go for it.
I have to agree with Roy, you have to get in the game in order to have a full understanding of the process. Having entered two regional meets and obtaining a Top Flight on each occasion, I must say the NCRS rules and standards are very clear. I'm sure we will always have some critics, but like Roy said, get the car on the field and then you will appreciate the process. Can one improve from one year to another? Yes, I made up almost 100 points from last year's Kissimmee's meet and ended up with a raw score of 98.1., by just following good advice from judges. I don't know about you guys, but I'm more focused on obtaining the award, meeting new members and having a good time, instead of criticizing the process. No system or process is perfect, but the NCRS is extremely well balanced.

Lighten up guys. This is just a kids game. None of this matters in the real world.
I will learn my terms better in the future. Whatever an original car is with some non original bolt, a carb, exhaust pipes and tips, and door panels. Whatever category that car fits in.
This is how people learn. I have been building these cars for years as most of us have. I have had over thirty of them as a lot of us have. I have had two for over 25 years as a lot of us have. I have been gathering original parts, as I see fit, as a lot of us have.
This is a hobby. A joke to most people. But, we like it. Let's keep things in perspective. We all have to learn sometime. I learned enough in this descussion to know I want to know more.
The 8 at the table were asking questions. Read the thread.

I know many people like original cars and are willing to cut some slack for condition, but remember Flight Judging is about how closely the car resembles when it left the factory and was dealer prepped for the new owner at delivery. Rust, corrosion, leaks, broken parts, cracks, wear, tear, etc. are just not that standard and thus condition deducts. It's really pretty simple.

Flight judging was a great learning experience for me. I was pretty familiar with my car, but learned a great deal more than I thought I already knew. I had the judging manuals and knew the correct parts, etc, but the years of experience of the judges is what really made it the best money could buy.

I would also like to try to go through bloomington judging, but flight judging costs around $100 and Bloomington is around $1000. Most of the judges are the same.

I guess I should have made it more clear that I had a sour taste in my mouth, but that has over time dissipated as I became more familiar with the process.

Amen Dick, and don't forget, if it has ruffled feathers like a duck. I'm guilty, I buy those stupid OEM parts and sometimes don't even put them on a car. There's some medical term for that I'm sure. Maybe I'll be on that Pickers show some day.
