      Re: Mice

Some people use mothballs, if you don't mind the smell . I use d-CON mouse killer bait. Put it around the garage. It seems to work well, started doing it after one of our little deer mice, who carry Hanta virus, made a little nest in my NCRS hat in the glove box with firewall insulation and shredded my registration and proof of insurance sheet. Very messy, and had to disinfect the whole area too due to the Hanta threat. After a few dead bodies, no more mice in my garage.

I use bait boxes. Found them at the hardware store. Pet and child proof. I use Havoc or One Bite blocks. Do not use the pellets as they will take them and store them.

i once, years ago, put out D-con in a garage under the house we lived in . after a week or so, a smell of decay permeated the dwelling(including the living quarters, which didn't endear me to the wifey). i looked and looked for the decaying carcuss in vain, all the while listening to the wifes comments . eventually the smell subsided--about 4 months as i recall. as we were vacating the house and packing all my garage pieces, i found the culprut, skeletal remains only. i've since resorted to the sticky pads with success. mike

Along with the baits and radio I use fabric dryer sheets, I read about it somewhere not sure if it is the reason I do not have a problem, but seems to work and smells a lot better than moth balls. Make sure there is no food source for them ie garbage cans, they donot bother beer cans however.

This is why you don't poison mice. Like Mike's experience, I learned the hard way. Victor mousetraps work very well. I usually bait and set them after any indication of mice. They're easy to set and easier to empty. You also don't have to feed them, clean up thier hairballs, empty thier litter box, and find something to do with them when you go on vacation. Remember, mice usually hang around in pairs. If you find one there will be more.

A mouse trap screwed to a 2x4 with just a little peanut butter Under the trigger pad. Well over 30 so far this year. Our old cat went into retirement and is now only working part time.

Clem provided a plan for a mouse trap made from a bucket partially filled with water or anti-freeze and a ramp and a rotating device that gave the mouse the last swan dive into the bucket of liquid. The image stayed with me for a long time. I would bet the thread is in the "similar threads" listed below this thread. Try the March 2008 thread below; I think that is it. Page down or search.

Edit add: I dislike posting : "use search" without having done so myself. After this post it took a fine breakfast at a nearby restaurant to get my search function up and working. See post #30 for what Mike and I are referring to:

I forgot to mention that the bait boxes were outside my garage. Have no smelled, or seen evidence of one mouse since they were placed outside.

terry: ever since clem's mouse trapping device hit the tdb, i've been using it. however, i use tap water instead of anti-freeze as i fear for my health when prepairing the McCagh Mice Pot Pies if i use anti-freeze. tasty little devils. merry christmas, mike

                            Tom,
For years I have been using a loud radio in my garage 24/7.
I have never seen a mouse or other critter and I believe that late at night it is a people deterrent also.
Most people seem to laugh at the idea, but has worked for me in my detached garage.

                              Paul,
good old spring mouse traps baited with peanut butter (plain or crunchy) work great, I use them in my attached garage.
