    Re: Disqualification: VIN Tag

    Dom,
Years ago I bought a early 54 Corvette from a state that did not issue titles on cars over a certain age, the 54 was one of them.
Ohio just required a bill of sale (not notorized) and a in state inspection.
I drove the car to a Chevy dealer for inspection.
A young guy came out to inspect the car. He said what kind of car is this? Does it have a vin tag?
$2.50 and a few minutes later I had a inspection certificate.
I had actually cut a section out of the floor to validate the vin which was correct, but the inspector was not interested and didn't understand the frame stamp.
I took the bill of sale and the inspection paperwork to the title bureau, filled out the paperwork with a $5500 sale price.
The title person looked at the paperwork and said a 54 Chevy can't be worth that much did you mean $550
I told her no, it was a nice car.
So I paid the taxes, got my title and that was that.
Pretty much no one in the whole process knew what they were doing (except me).
Oh well,I had fun with the car for years.

      Re: Disqualification: VIN Tag

I wish my experiences with the car title and registration process were as simple and uneventful as you guys. I once bought a '65 Mustang convertible, and as it had been repainted from the original yellow to red, the owner told me they "restored" the door tag to indicate the color change. It was a new door tag, and on a Mustang it is not supposed to be used for vehicle identification anyway, but does have the VIN along with other data about the car. Anyway, to make a long story short, at that time in my state any car older than 1980 brought in from out of state must have the VIN inspected by the State Police at their HQ. I bought the car and got the title (Florida), took it to be inspected, the trooper looked at the door tag, pronounced it a reproduction and thus tampered, tried to find the other VINs in the front fenders, which had been replaced years ago due to accidents, couldn't find anything but the VIN on the door tag, checked the color codes, saw it was not as the original car matching that VIN in his database and then refused to title and register the car due to suspicions of VIN fraud. He said I could go get sworn affidavits from the previous owners in his database and come back to try again. I just got my money back and returned the car. Maybe it was finally sold in California or Ohio?

The judge that called into question the suspect vin plate on the 65' actually did the owner a big favor, the
owner now has a chance to correct the problem before it becomes a part of the NCRS data base.

The '61 I have a thread going on, 'is it a fuelie with twice cable speed tach'???

The car has 2 handwritten bills of sale without even the car VIN number on them, ending up with the guy I bought it from.

The guy I bought it from, Robert Young, signed my handwritten bill of sale with the steering column number on it... which was easy to read, since the engine and entire left front of the car was missing. (sigh)

            Will,
A car sold on a bill of sale can be very difficult (impossible) to title and register.

The pictures I put in the 'twice cable speed' thread went to the DMV office, along with the bill of sale.

The ladies were smiling at the "Hotrod parts illustrated" magazine cover - college guy, huh? Sure you got it for the car parts...

but the advertisement and the two pix of the car in tow and with Bill and me convinced them it was good.

weren't they cheating the state out of sales tax on the cars by saying a $250,000 custom hot rod was a 1930 ford or something like that
