Is it an optical illusion or is the center "O" in both the engine stamp and the S/N out of "Whompus" with respect to the orientation of the other characters? Also would like a better photo (higher rez) of the the machining marks betwen the engine stamp and the head.

Center "O" still looks like me at midnite in my drinkin' days at least with my eyes.

There is a poster here that is every bit as good as Greening, but seems has chosen to stay out of this thread. Must be a good reason, if you can't say anything good, don't say it.

I agree with Wayne . I compared it with to orig. blocks I have and the 5 ,the 2 and the T were not the same , very close but again mine are 16120 and 16718 . they could have changed some of the stamps in that amount of time . The broch marks look a little heavy to me . But thats the opion of a body guy not a numbers guy .Bill

There is a nice photo of a 65 396 pad stamping in a book entitled "Corvette Restoration State of the Art" by Dave Burroughs (1981) on page 71. The stamping on the pad is "T0329IF" and "5114971". In the date code stamping the "9" is slightly tilted but the "F" is really tilted and out of alignment. I'm sure that all the "veteran" NCRS members have this book.

Dick-- I am traveling and just saw this thread on the hotel computer. I think Wayne nailed it. The T,6,9, and I are not right. The vin characters are off. The grain is bad, and the right side of the pad looks like it may have been welded. Looks like little pock marks from welding bubbles. However, a 65 396 has so many unique car features that it should be possible to evaluate the car on more than just a poor stamping job.
