Re: 67 paint the way the General did it

    Scott,

If you attach the rear valance loosely with two bolts, it will try to hang straight down forcing the mounting tabs to contact the back of the car at the top. This would explain why no overspray made its way behind the panel.

The ends (left and right) of the rear valance have very good paint coverage because of the way the panel mounts using two bolts.

      Wayne,

Are you saying ALL of the headlight bezel screws (sides and bottom) are bright plated, or have you seen black flat-head Phillips screws at either the side or bottom of the headlamp bezel?

The self tapping are bright, that is the lower ones. As far as I am concerned, I consider black phosphate correct for the uppers, except maybe 63s.

          Mike,

These pictures are trying to capture the cut out present on the front lower valance for big block cars. If you look at the lower part of the first picture you can see some of the core support. Hope this helps.

            A few more interesting pictures:

Black overspray on the front valance behind the grille. Most likely from the hood or engine bay black out process.

              Thanks for the pictures.
Mostly consistent with the Bowtie Candidate cars we judged in SD.
The ones in SD were not as sloppy with the glue and had better coverage in jambs and underside of hood area
but bottom of doors was identical to your images.

I have lots of original paint pictures also. Most I have given to Tom Ames. Here is another of the rear valance painting on a 67 435 coupe that was bought new in my hometown by my friend who lived here all his life.

Actually all seem to have the relief in 66-67.

I wondered about that too. Why would only big block cars have the cutout?

With the change in radiator support position more forward and up into the lower panel, they must have had some clearance issues. The small block tank hangs down in that area. That could have been the issue, or clearance to get to the headlight support rod. But, that rod should have been installed before the radiator and shouldn't have been an issue on the line. Maybe they were looking out for mechanics? HA HA.

Thanks for clarifying! I didn't realize it was on all small and big blocks in 66-67 . Is there any reference to this in the AIM or just by example? I guess most of the cars I've looked at have been wrecked and that detail overlooked during repair. I sure do have alot to learn.

                          Daniel -

The lower valance (lower grille panel) with the depression/cutout was the same part number (3892259) for '66-'67 on all units; there was no unique part released for use with big-blocks.

                            Great Pictures!!

Next time you are at the car with a camera, Could you get some shots showing the paint coverage on the bottom, and front end of the door and hinge pillar.

                            thank you,

To each his own, but there is no comparison between my '67 L71 coupe and my '12 ZR1 in anything. I like old cars, but they are old cars and fun to drive in certain situations (short trips, parades, car shows, judging meets, but not long trips in hot temps and rain, snow, etc.) and you just can't compare them to the quality, power, technology, fit and finish of a new Corvette.
