That's probably okay. API gear oil viscosities use a different scale than engine oils. So the absolute viscosity of 80W-90 gear oil is in the same ballpark as a SAE 50 engine oil.

The spec for my '88 MBZ five-speed is SAE 20 non-detergent engine oil or ATF. I currently have Redline MTL in it which is a 70W-75 GL-4. I also use MTL in my Cosworth Vega's BW T-50 five-speed, which originally speced ATF.

The original spec for the transaxle in my '91 MR2 was ATF, but Toyota changed it to 75W-90 GL-4, and I use Redline MT-90, which meets that spec.

As far as the old Corvette four-speeds are concerned, since my T-10 showed no evidence of "yellow metal" corrosion when I rebuilt it at 115K miles, I still use and recommend 80W-90 GL-5.

Dave, I am not sure where the procedure is listed, possibly in the ST-12 (number ? - the GM service manual). It is pretty easy, in nuetral there is a slot in the shifter main body to put in a rod (allen wrench will do). If it will not go in you need to adjust the arms (1-2, 3-4, or reverse) until it goes in. One thing that complicates it is the lack of clearance between the shifter and the body tunnel. Good luck, Don H.

Thank you, Don. I'm planning to check out the lube level of my T10 and diff today.

        Question for the group here:

I don't have a lift and can't get under the tranny area of the car without jacking the front end (I think I can get to the diff without lifting the back end). How can I check the tranny oil while keeping the car level? If I jack up the front end, won't that skew the oil level?

I guess what I'm asking is: How do you guys who don't have a lift, gain access to the fill hole of a level T10?

        Thanks!

        Dave
