Re: '58 BW T10 Lube Procedure
That's probably okay. API gear oil viscosities use a different scale than engine oils. So the absolute viscosity of 80W-90 gear oil is in the same ballpark as a SAE 50 engine oil.
The spec for my '88 MBZ five-speed is SAE 20 non-detergent engine oil or ATF. I currently have Redline MTL in it which is a 70W-75 GL-4. I also use MTL in my Cosworth Vega's BW T-50 five-speed, which originally speced ATF.
The original spec for the transaxle in my '91 MR2 was ATF, but Toyota changed it to 75W-90 GL-4, and I use Redline MT-90, which meets that spec.
As far as the old Corvette four-speeds are concerned, since my T-10 showed no evidence of "yellow metal" corrosion when I rebuilt it at 115K miles, I still use and recommend 80W-90 GL-5.
