Re: D98 pin stripe option
I can only tell you what I was told to me by the people from the Killibrew organization. As you know Gordon Killebrew is well respected for his knowledge of the C4 Corvettes. When I recieved the option code booklet from the Killebrew people as advertized in the last issue of Driveline and found on page seven option D98 my first thought was the Killebrew people had a mis print in the booklet so I called the number 1-615-654-2864. I got a answering machine so I said to myself figures. Within a few hours I recieved a phone call from them and I told them about the mis print in their booklet. I was then linked to a southeran gentileman who explained to me fully what the D98 code meant. When he told me he personality put them on C4 Corvettes at Bowling Green he procedded to give me a telephone number of a persom who had the strip on his C4 since he purschased it. That person proceeded to remove the strip because he said he did not think it belonged on the car. When he spoke to the killebrew people they told him the same story. The stripe belonged on his car. He in turn he researched and found the current 3M part number and restriped his car. My personal feeling is the stripe belongs on early Corvettes with D98 option. Why there is no part number I can not tell you. Will my car loose points if judged , probably. It would of been much easier for the Killerbrew people to tell me it was a general code used for stripes on GM cars in general then for them to make up a story about such a option existing. Again I was told it was very rare and wont be found on most early C4s.- Top

Re: D98 pin stripe option
The stripe is only 3/16 of and inch and also goes around the wheel well on both fenders. That picture is a little dark and I am not sure if all two toned cars had a stripe with D84 option. Maybe some one who has that option can clarify that.- Top

Re: D98 pin stripe option
In my opinion, an 84-86 with pin stripes that is presented for judging would need to have the option listed on the parts identification label and/or the build sheet /window sticker listing the option to avoid a deduction. Build sheets and window stickers are available for every Bowling Green built Corvette through the National Corvette Museum. They are recognized as official GM documents. The JM's encourage owners to obtain these documents so these kind of disputes can be resolved.- Top

Re: D98 pin stripe option
I spent part of the weekend going through Corvette Fever and Vette Vues for 1984-1986 and this included info about the new model releases. Nothing about stripes anywhere and for a while I was thinking the two-tone cars got accent stripes but there were enough photos of these cars when new to rule that out. I did find one photo that looks like it has the stripes you are describing but it's in black and white and isn't good enough to tell whether it's a stripe or the lighting.- Top

Re: D98 pin stripe option
However, without documentation I don't see any option being accepted for judging. As already noted there should be documentation both on the car and on the build sheet - which is available from the NCM.
Anyone presenting a car for judging will need the documentation at least on the car and likely (in the short term) on the build sheet.
I'm sure that Zora said that certain things were "available" too but his level of available and ours might have differed.

I don't think that anyone is making fun of Gordon. He is a wealth of knowledge.

You must be referring to the short throw/long throw bruhaha that went on some years ago. All that started because some "journalist" badgered Zora into saying "ALLCORVETTES COME WITH SHORT THROW FROM FACTORY" so that his (the "journalist's") buddy could present his car for PV in the short throw position. Elder abuse was the real problem. That one still gets me steamed.Terry- Top

Re: D98 pin stripe option
Here's another pic of an 85 that was posted on CF on this issue. Still obviously nothing conclusive, but interesting that the size and placement of this stripe appears consistent with the one on the gold car in my last post. Nessie is getting less camera shy!Attached Files- Top

No, wasn't directly referring to that - though it did cross my mind.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Re: D98 pin stripe option
When the car is fnished I will send pictures. For the record I have codes on my storage bin that are NOT on my build sheet. I will send photos of all of it. I would suggest you all giving Gordons line a call. I have nothing to gain by making this stuff up unless I am misunderstanding what I was told. 1 615 654 2864- Top

The OP just asked if anyone other than could verify the stripes and mentioned that GK had personally installed them.
Then we get people mentioning the Loch Ness monster & Unicorns & other rubbish basically saying it ain't so. And then, someone has the gall to use Corvette Fever & Vette Vues as resoures to again refute the claim. And worst of all YOU seem to think that GK may have a "moment" and not remember clearly. FWIW, I am proud to say I've known Gordon for over 10 years and for those who do not know him, rest assured, he has a true photograpic memory. If you ask a question of him, then you will get a correct answer. Personally I could care less about the whole discussion, but what gets me is that this is supposed to be a "Tech" forum for people seeking the correct answer and when it's given no one cares.- Top
