Of course I have older JM but I was under the impression that even with a state issued VIN one could have his/her car judged. Guess I was wrong. Because I can just imagine what one would go through with that state VIN, why they would be ask to leave , so as not to contaminate the field with its presences .

There's nothing new here - those policies have been covered and explained in the "Corvette Judging Reference Manual" for many, many years; you should get one and read Section 2(1), Vehicle Identification. State-issued VINs are fine as long as they match the title/registration, and GM-issued replacement VINs are fine with Chevrolet documentation confirming issuance.

So would NCRS take a signed document with a notary seal stating that GM had reissued the tag? Are would it need to come from GM ? I am not trying to be a smart ass, I would just like clarification on what one would need in order to satisfy NCRS. If the GM paper work was not with the car any more. And at each meet would one be required to bring this with them?

Did you read my reply above? Do you have the Corvette Judging Reference Manual? The JRM is very clear that the documentation confirming issuance of a GM-issued replacement VIN plate must come from Chevrolet.

Re: Rust damaged VIN tag, what to do?

George, I have the same issue with a 69 coupe. I started restoration in 1988. The winshield piller was rusted to badly
to repair the piller. I installed a complete GM replace windshield hoop consisting of both pillers and the one piece top section.
My vin tag was also missing the bottom half. It had rusted along with the piller. After replacement I reinstalled top of vin tag.
Lucky for me, what was missing was from bottom of rivit. Missing was1943. The 79SXXXXXX was still intact. Cleaned, painted
and installed. The car is from West Virginia, I contacted MVA and recieved photo copies of titles for all owners and GM delivery document
to Wilson Chevrolet. It also has tank sticker and vin stamp on two places on frame. I documented restortation with pictures, before and after. This issue is very common
with the C3 due to water damage to the windshield frame because of location of leaks. George, document everything. Pictures. Loony.

Thanks to all who have posted and messaged me.
I have some better photos (see below).
I will be trying to use this vin plate and re-using the original rivets (if I can master that task).

Scary to think how many of these cars are purchased without the new owner knowing what's underneath the stainless/weather stripping/bondo. I knew, but have the pieces, time, and wherewithal to fix this.

Re: Rust damaged VIN tag, what to do?

I wonder if you could somehow glue (?) it to a piece of metal of the original size which would be underneath it as a support. Rivet holes could then still be used, but less chance of the original falling off.

Just a thought. That lower hole is not going to survive any attempt to remove that tag.

                          Hey Terry,
It just a windshield frame and part of the lower support. Rocker channels and frame are not bad at all.
It's a real 900 color (Black)---I know you know that code----, convertible, Tobacco leather, speed warning, tele, p/w, 427/435 car, (maybe L89--Has the aluminum heads, but no documentation--yet!), so I can't just let go undone.

Even with all that bling -- and even if it is an L89 -- that is still a lot of work and I admire both your skill and fortitude. I do know someone who had the same issues as you plus the rocker channels on a 1971 or 1972 -- I forget which. THAT was just over the top to save the car. The body whet on a level plate to do that task at a real high-end fab shop. I have to admire those of you who will take on that kind of a task. Even if, as in the case I mentioned it was work for hire at a shop.

Perhaps I should mention the only piece of original exterior sheet metal on my 1967 Chevelle hardtop is the trunk lid. We did manage to save about 1/3 of the interior floor, but that was ALL of the floor we could save. Well since this is a Corvette forum you probably don't want to hear the rest of THAT story. I only mention it to let you know that I really do know what you are dealing with.

                              Lyndon -

VIN plates have always been checked, and NCRS doesn't "certify" anything. You really need to read the (latest) version of your JG, the Corvette Judging Reference Manual, and the disclaimer on the back side of any Flight Award certificate so you better understand the NCRS judging philosophy and how the process works; it will significantly reduce your need to rant.
