Re: The car is packed and Europe awaits
I started my travels before the internet, and I would either buy the language books or borrow them from the library. The goal is to learn enough to order food and ask directions. My friend in Japan called it "suicide Japanese".
One mild February afternoon I was walking down a street in Malmo and a car with with German number plates pulled up beside me and stopped. The driver said something to me in Swedish with a heavy German accent. With a Swedish twist I said "guten tag" and then in my southern drawl I said "I don't understand a word you're saying". You should have seen the look on his face, as he was already frustrated at being lost. I did manage a "sprechen sie Englisch?" but he'd already started to speed off. Tourists!...I bet he said the same thing.- Top

Hi Rob,
And the rest of forum members who have followed some of my adventures.
As some of you may know, I was honored to be asked to give a presentation of my personal corvette trip in my 66 roadster to all 48 States, at the Novi, MI, NCRS National Convention last month.
After some adventures and two days of driving across Canada from Maine to Novi, MI, I finally make it to the convention center. It is 7 am and there are very few cars in the " Secured " parking area for Corvette.
I park my car, and slowly get out, I use to get out faster , but you know how it is.
And I hear a voice saying " Jack ? " I look around who should be the very first person that I meet at the NCRS show ?
Erik Stroeve, a member of the Dutch NCRS Chapter. He was attending the convention and acting as an "Observer Judge" on C3 or C4's.
He recognized my plate " L79-66 " from my posts on the 48 state trip and possible European trip. I am sorry but I did not think to take his picture.
Just imagine, you drive haft-way across America to the heartland of American cars, and you meet a fellow enthusiast from Holland.
The convention was great and I will give follow up posts on it and my trip home shortly.
I would like to thank all of you for allowing me to play " Peter Pan & the Lost Corvette Boys " for the last few years.
Life has dictated that " Peter and gang stay in the garage for a little while.
I look forward to posting and saying thank you, to some great people.

thanks for the invite. You never know. My son spent 3 months in Australia a few years ago when he was in college, on a student exchange program.
He worked on engineering projects for the government . He had a great time and enjoyed the people.
Maybe some day......

Europeans coming to Maine for a vist
Hello to all,
Sorry for lack of posts since I got back from France and the Le Mans race. I think 4 years of travel and posting just got to me. I had trouble sitting down looking at pictures or doing posts. I was driving my car every day when possible.
Good news, I am back in the saddle and will host 2 couples from Berlin , Germany. They fly into Boston, drive up to Portland , Maine, stay for 3 days, with me lending my car to them to explore the coast of Maine.
Matthias's parents where very kind to me on my first night in Germany, by letting me stay with them in their castle.
Here are some photos of my time with them. I will post more once they arrive. I am still waiting for a few of my US hosts to come up for a visit.
Nice parents

Just a little something from Germany as a gift
Many thanks to Matthias, Frank , Bettina & Claudia for the wonderful gift. We drank it all, you play a game drinking from the boot without making a splash as the beer drains back down the boot. If you make a splash , you have to drink again.....and again...and again...

Re: The car is packed and Europe awaits
Jack was the Corvette guy that other Corvette guys want to be when they grow up....his tour included driving across 100's of miles of lonely roads with no service stations and no cell phone coverage - an intrepid traveler to say the least...
He stayed with me on his 48 state tour; we hooked up at Old Town, Kissimmee, FL one Saturday night and we cruised home in the evening with his C2 along side my C1 goading each other a bit at interstate speeds and then he stayed overnight at my place. We sat in the hot tub, drank too much beer and BS'ed about cars and life like old friends...
Jack sitting in my '61 in first pic and his car in the second; he had added a PS side view mirror and a clever "third latch" in the middle of his convertible header bar which eliminated the typical leaks. A "one of a kind" in our hobby!
RIP Jack - you did it right man...- Top
