Double VIN derivative on stamp pad?

Ignore the paint. Anybody ever seen a double VIN stamp like this? The car's VIN ends in 5126. The leading theory is that a 9 was erroneously loaded into the holder instead of a 6. To correct this, a 6 was then substituted and a second stamping then applied in a different location. Why would the incorrect stamp not have been ground out, as we typically see, prior to the restamp?

Pretty strange. Bet it's real, but I'm glad it's not on my car and I have to explain it to everyone who looks at it ! Bet the guy who goofed that one up never thought the whole world would see the error many years later.

Looks like the transmission stamp is 'special' too:

I have never seen one like that.

It's a case study in forensics, however. Both VIN stamps came from the same gang. I'm not the only one seeing the misalignment of the first "6" and the correspondingly weak "44" in both VIN stamps.

I have seen three stamps. One wrong, one correct over that, and one extra.

Either those two VIN's build sheets were mixed up or there were more in the mix, namley those between these two.

That was one bad day in the plant

Probably easier to restamp then go looking for a grinder.

                Steve -

The engine plants used grinders, but St. Louis used an "X" stamp to "X-out" the wrong number, which was the Engineering-issued procedure for assembly plants (when they had time and felt like it).

                      John,
Could the 6 have been inserted in the tool upside down to become a 9?

                        Yes, it could.
