Many full-service radiator shops also do fuel tank repair. You might check those in your area and find one that also gets a good consumer or Better Business Bureau rating. This way, you won't have to send the tank off for repair.

24 or 37 gallons? Steel or fiberglass?

Yes, but I think he has a C1 with a 24 gallon steel tank. His year model of interest shows 56-67, anyway, and that's what I was going by.

                Hi Ron,

I would suggest you contact either Ken and Gary Nabor in Houston, Texas or Kevin McKay in Valley Stream, New York. Kevin's number is (516) 568-1959. I am sorry I don't have the Nabor's number but they should not be hard to find. Perhaps someone will chime in with it. Both the Nabors and Kevin have extensive experience in working on cars with big tanks and should be able to help you.

You mention that at one time your car was a fuel car. If it were mine, I would find a correct fuel unit and put it back on the car. Fuel injected big tank cars are hard to find.

                Best of luck,
                Rick

Ron -- we're royally confused; can you please state the model year of your car, and if the gas tank looks like the pics below ?

P.S. Don't know if Windoz will open .bmp files

...it will be interesting to see how long it takes ethanol to turn this fiberglass tank into a "liquid jelly" like substance.

Gary and Ken Nabers in Houston, Tx. (713) 664-1967.
Kevin and Gary have many years experience repairing, and even rebuilding. If your car is a 1963 model, it very well may be a Z0-6 Tanker. No matter, all the TANKERS are rare and deserve to be restored and cared for.

That's a whole 'nuther story. The only possible way that I could see these tanks being repaired is with some sort of "slosh around" sealant. Even if such a material was effective, I'm not so sure it would last very long. There may well be ways to externally patch the tank but I think it will end up being a situation like the little Dutch boy faced with his finger in the hole in the dike.

The fact of the matter is this: fiberglass reinforced plastic is an organic material. Gasoline contains a number of organic solvents that will degrade just about any organic material over time. Once gasoline is first added to the tank (at St. Louis) the degradation begins and it proceeds inexorably thereafter. 45+ years is a long time for this degradation to proceed and PLENTY of time for a lot of damage to be done to the fiberglass.

Exactly like your pictures, it is a 63, the paint under the gas lid when raised is the the same color as the car, silver, the jack was stored inside the car on the passanger side with I believe a single rivit, no evidence the jack was ever stored behind the driver seat, the cover has 4 small holes behind the passanger seat on the top of the cover, about the same deminisions as the four corners of a license plate.....

YES. Some of the Z0-6 restorers have been know to make a replacement.
