The car is packed 48 states await

Hi, Well, the car is done mechanically and today we packed a 66 roadster with gear to keep me going for 3 months. I leave on the morning tide. a long awaited 48 state journey with my car.

I thank all of the forum members who have helped me many times over the last 2 years. It will really fun to meet many of you in the upcoming months. I hope some of you, (you know who) have been doing their little timetables about their car and life.

Members who I may visit on my trip, be a little patient with me for the first week or so. I am using new computer and internet stuff for this trip and it will take a little time to get it all working on the road.

    Thanks again, see you soon

    Jack

    PS

I am including three links for those who wish to follow the adventure.

One is the projected route :

This one will be the actual route traveled

This is my blog where I will post daily events and travels
you can follow my trip and travel dates to states by clicking on the link (travel calender) just below the picture of the car.

I thought you might like to see what it looks like to pack for the trip

Car ran great until the Bronx. Stopped at toll both. Seems like fuel pump at first.
got it towed to a small shop, car started and ran great, got to west point and it quit again. rested it , started again , staying in Cornwall tonight, will try to fix it in am. could it be coil , or heat boiling gas? very hot and humid in NY today.

Hope to see members in western NY on Thursday,

see map for route covered over last three days.

Hard to get into a routine, will get better once out in the country. will post pictures once I settle down. Living out of car is a challenge . Just unpacking and repacking ........ looks like I will be wearing the same clothes over and over

                Still loving it

                  Jack,

It's tough to start guessing at a problem like this. Double check that the coil pink wires are not touching shielding.

If it stays broke you could use a test light at the coil primary + wire (pink) to check if wire has power with ignition switch in run position which would narrow down problem to possible coil. If you have a test light..

When it quits, if you remove the air cleaner does the accellerator pump shoot gas down manifold? Watch your eyes..

Jack, have a great trip and hope all goes well. This needs to be locked at top of threads so we don't have to hunt for it.

My gut tells me fuel pump. I adjusted floats , seems to OK , I have gotten all to( Webster NY) no only Cortland (car died) , about 200 miles from my start this morning at West Point.

I am stopping at Dan Dillingham this afternoon. (am tomorrow)

Will have a chance to work on it

                        Jack,
If you need a shop to right your car my place is open to you. I have some parts and all the tools you would need.
And my hands are always dirty anyway.

I'm a short drive 10 minutes tops from Dan's place.

Plug 7289 Slocum Rd Ontario NY into you GPS.

                              Jack,

My ISP has been providing lousy connectivity, so I have been offline for the last 26 hours. Just read your reply and query.

No, I don't think that it is the fuel pump. Anyway, by the time you read this you might have already located the problem.

Do everything you can to keep the intake manifold/carburetor as cool as possible, including advancing your timing a few degrees beyond the recommended setting (assuming that your timing is mapped correctly); make sure the heat riser is jammed wide open; richen the idle mixture screws by 1/2 turn to cool the air/fuel charge into the cylinders; make sure the "hot slot" (if you have one, or if your engine is not an L79) is plugged in the intake manifold; if necessary, remove the intake manifold and block BOTH SIDES of the exhaust crossover passage. As a last resort, unlatch the hood and keep it that way......the low pressure zone at the cowl/trailing edge of the hood will suck in outside air to cool things (somewhat).

If the engine cuts out and will not restart until cool, then I suspect a "marginal"/overheated coil. If engine dies, and fuel bowls are still full, and fuel is seen dripping through boosters, then it is percolating and flooding. In that case, the engine should start on the unloader if you keep your foot to the floor until it starts. If carb is dry (and, I doubt it) then that's your fuel pump or fuel filter. Check the vent cap on the tank......be sure it is not air-locked.

Keep us posted, and when you get underway, you're welcome to take a slight detour from your planned route. I live about 25 miles south of the southern tip of NYC.

                              Joe

PS: Who is that guy on the right of your photo? Looks like Cheech Marin.

PPS: I hope for your navigator's sake (if you have one) that you at least change your underwear once in awhile!
