No, I don't think that it is the fuel pump. Anyway, by the time you read this you might have already located the problem.

Do everything you can to keep the intake manifold/carburetor as cool as possible, including advancing your timing a few degrees beyond the recommended setting (assuming that your timing is mapped correctly); make sure the heat riser is jammed wide open; richen the idle mixture screws by 1/2 turn to cool the air/fuel charge into the cylinders; make sure the "hot slot" (if you have one, or if your engine is not an L79) is plugged in the intake manifold; if necessary, remove the intake manifold and block BOTH SIDES of the exhaust crossover passage. As a last resort, unlatch the hood and keep it that way......the low pressure zone at the cowl/trailing edge of the hood will suck in outside air to cool things (somewhat).

If the engine cuts out and will not restart until cool, then I suspect a "marginal"/overheated coil. If engine dies, and fuel bowls are still full, and fuel is seen dripping through boosters, then it is percolating and flooding. In that case, the engine should start on the unloader if you keep your foot to the floor until it starts. If carb is dry (and, I doubt it) then that's your fuel pump or fuel filter. Check the vent cap on the tank......be sure it is not air-locked.

Keep us posted, and when you get underway, you're welcome to take a slight detour from your planned route. I live about 25 miles south of the southern tip of NYC.

    Joe

PS: Who is that guy on the right of your photo? Looks like Cheech Marin.

PPS: I hope for your navigator's sake (if you have one) that you at least change your underwear once in awhile!

It was the pump. Changed it in Cortland NY. Car running like a champ now.

Doing a wash tonight in Welland Ontario, at Sam Kalmut's house. He has the Grand Sport . Off to see my son (row) race at the Canadian Henley Regatta.

      Hey Jack,
Sorry to hear about your travel troubles. I can bet that this will not be the last of them. The better you take them the easier the ride will be!

I look forward to seeing you here in Charlotte, NC. I am mourning the loss of Charlie Cadenhead the Texas Chairman of the NCRS. It is always difficult to watch the passing of someone you greatly admire.

Have a safe trip to here. I look forward to meeting you in the city I love so very much!
As you know, there is help for you at any turn in the road. Just ask!

      Again, safe travels!

                Hi Jack,
I've been tracking the progress you've made on your car leading up to your journey, and I commend you for venturing out on such an ambitious trip. Without question, it sounds like an adventure of a lifetime! I have a '65 convertible and live in Aventura, Florida (located between Miami and Fort Lauderdale). I see that you will be making a stop in Boca Raton which is only 30 to 40 minutes north of me. If you are interested and have the time, I would be happy to drive up to Boca (in my Vette of course) to say hello and chat about our cars. I know you are on a tight time schedule, so I would make it a short visit... however, I would love to see your car and hear about your trip. Send me a PM if you have the time to meet (just give me a little notice so I can manage my business appointments). Enjoy the rest of your journey !

                Happy travels,
                Roger Piper (50141)

                      Jack,
With some luck, the temperature might drop a few degrees in early October here in South Florida -- a great time of year for top-down cruising! Stay in touch... I look forward to hearing from you .

Jack's plan is to be in southeast Michigan on Thursday and the MI chapter has the welcome mat out! We will be gathering at 850 Old Woodward Avenue in Birmingham, MI. Time is 6:30 PM. Private message or email me with any questions if you can join us. The MI chapter is hoping that all that can join will - after all it's cruising time on Woodward!

Jack reminds me of the trip my wife and I took 20 years ago in our 55 Corvette around the country . Talked about making the trip in SACE book and many people around the country also had us stay with them . Met so many good people and made many friends from Ca. To NY and Canada 10,000 miles before we got home . We've been thinking of doing it again . But best to you and good luck driving .

Now you can see why I have been needing a lot of help with my 57. Oh well, it is starting to come together now. Steering column is back in now, along with several dash and firewall stuff. Hope to have the engine back in 2 or 3 weeks. It was great having Jack here - just wished he could have stayed longer but I understand he wanted to see his son compete in a boat race. That nasty old fuel pump put him behind.
Another benefit of Jack being here is I finally got to meet Gene and Susan Manno, who live only 10 minutes from me. They have 3 beautiful Corvettes and a 4th in process. -Dan-
