    67 L79 oil filter assembly...

i already searched the archives to save embarrassment, but couldn't find any info...went to change oil & filter (canister type) and stupididly forgot the reassembly sequence of ALL the parts. plus, i wanted to make sure the previous owner did it right. i have 1- large bolt, 1-canister, 1-filter, 1-spring, 1-cone shaped thing, 1-star type washer, 1- small rubber washer and 1- small metal washer. i know the obvious...filter into the canister. DUH! where do ALL the other parts go, correctly. i'm thinking run the bolt through the canister first. then the spring. then the cone shaped thing. then the filter. where do the washers go?
any input will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Re: 67 L79 oil filter assembly...

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a very related question...

My '67 L79 was converted to spin-on during it's lifetime and I'd like to return it to the canister setup. I have a canister, long bolt, & the bypass asy that bolts to block. Anyone know where to get the other small pieces (washers, spring, cone?, etc)? Also, any feedback regarding significant pros/cons of changing from aftermarket spin-on to original cartridge would be appreciated. I'm most concerned about best filtering setup and not concerned about ease of filter change.

    Thanks.

hey jack...the highjacking's cool...i don't have any idea as to where to get ALL the little pieces, but getting back to my post...i think i have figured it out except for the star type washer. first put the bolt through the canister. then add the rubber washer. then the metal washer. then the spring. then the cone (which fits into the filter) then drop in the filter. now, where does that star type washer go? i'm thinking thread it onto the bolt. but what does that do?

Keven, sorry I can't help directly, but, if you have some vendors catalogs, it , they may show an exploded view. Bill

PROBLEM SOLVED!!! i talked to a good friend of mine. he's a mid-year man from WAAYY back. it seems that when you buy the canister, then and now, it comes with the complete bolt and accessories attached. it's not supposed to come apart, but it does incase your dumb like me and take it apart and have to reassemble it. it seems that the star-like washer holds the bolt in place so it doesn't fall out when changing the filter. another words, once it's loosened up, DON'T pull it out like i did. remove the canister, filter and bolt assembly as a whole unit and just drop in a new filter. he also said it's best to remove the 2-bolt plate it's attached to to make sure ALL the large rubber seal has been removed before replacing it with the new rubber seal that comes with the new filter. reinstall the 2-bolt plate before you put the canister back, of course. sometimes, after a few changes, some of the rubber seal might get stuck up there and it's very hard to get it all out without removing that piece first. done deal!!!
