what type valve seals were used 1966 L72 (umbrella or o-ring ) thanks #6 plug fouled oil ,compression 200 psi all cylinders any special tools needed for seal removal have valve spring removal tool also any special brand of seal probably comes in head gasket set

Carl -- going by the service catalogs, they were using the black rubber umbrella seals for all production big blocks (396, 427), still, as of Oct '66.

Do some archive diving. If you have the original single spring/damper setup, which are prone to breaking, you should replace all with the later integral dual spring/seal/retainer.

This has been thoroughly discussed including a thread earlier this week.

still need info on 1966 L72 motor read tech discussion on valve seals removed intake spring from #6 double valve spring with damper white umbrella seal with expander spring what manufactuer and a tool to remove and install seal any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do your springs look like the pictures I attached? The seal I got from GM is more like yellow. As far as I know there is no separate tool for the valve seals. You replace the whole spring assembly, including the keepers of course, with the valve spring compressor you already have.

I can provide more info on the parts I got from the Chevy dealer if that proves necessary.

How long ago did you order these? My local dealer told me today they have been discontinued and that the kit of 16 under #12371061 does not include retainers or seals.

valve seal on valve guide retainer looks like seal could be attached to it talked to person built motor was told perfect circle makes seal no specific info on their site am I missing something ? thanks for your help

If the valve seals on the engine are WHITE teflon with a spring metal band securing it to the valve guide and a circumferential spring wire applying pressure to the valve stem, that is an aftermarket seal. It was not used in PRODUCTION.

I dug up my receipt from Weber Chevrolet. It is dated February 23, 2009. That's a real bummer! Maybe if you poke around on the internet or try a few Chevy dealers you might get lucky and find the old configuration. By the way, the 12371061 set of 16 3970627 valve springs listed for $302.86, I got them discounted to $258.72, just because I am such a nice guy!

Clem -- is it possible to tell, from looking at or measuring the machined guide, what type of seal was / should be installed ? These guides were machined by a previous owner. (see pic) dia 0.53", height (bevelled tip down to circumferential step 0.35".
