Re: C2 chassis VIN stamping location

Was the same stamp used on the trans as was used on the frame?

      Ronald,

I believe the hand stamp that's used for the engine pad is also used on the transmission, this is different than the frame stamp.

No they were different, at least on my '63. Frame on the left, transmission on the right.

          Tim, thanks.

To Doug's point up a notch, "64's have the VIN stamped on the Muncie' seems like I recall discussion here a year or so back on a variable start point for that in MY 64 or 65.

When is the consensus that the trans stamping started?

Re: C2 chassis VIN stamping location

Well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that with brake cleaner and a wire brush, I was able to clean the top of the frame well enough to see the VIN stamped on the chasis. The bad news is that I have determined that my 63 body is mounted on a 67 frame. The stamping is 7S122848. The 7S in front means that it can only be a 63, 64 or 67. Looking up the Corvette Black Book tells me that the only year that they built that many, with a 7S prefix was 67. Now I have some serious decisions to make about whether to modify it so I can put 63 parking brake, etc. The project can not afford to buy a new/replacment 63 frame. Does anyone knows where I can swap my 67 frame for a 63 frame? I guess it's time to put a swap ad in the Driveline. Wish me luck.

What ever you do with a different frame its going to cost $$$. Is this a body off in progress? Is your intention full NCRS style restoration, restore to a driver or?

It's a resto mod, with the body off and in my garage, while the chassis is in another garage 6 miles away. I never intended to to a ful NCRS restoration. Just a real nice driver, that I wouldn't be afraid to take out every chance I get.

Why not just keep your 67 frame and replace the parking brake bracket ? The front crossmember on the 67 frame has an indent for a big block pulley, right ?

The 63 frame would not have that.

                    Peter,

Better be careful buying a used 63 frame if it comes to that. You may end up with more problems than you have now..

Peter, the guys are suggesting a practical solution.

I'd expect the frame to cost you $5000 or more plus shipping. Used or reproduction cost about the same. A 63 frame has a high probability of having problems like being bent and you get the surprise when you put the car back on it, perforation in a lot of areas, weakness due to rusting from the inside out, etc.

Why bother if the car is not a full restoration to the standard?

                        John,
By now I was sure I knew EVERY inch of my 67 car till I looked where you said and it popped out at me. It was much clearer than the one by the drivers seat.

On a '67, the rearmost VIN stamp is centered exactly on the front edge of the #4 body mount bracket.

My 63 had the frame indented for rear discs. I believe the number was lost in that process. I could not find one on the driver kick up.

Are you saying there is a second number on the frame to look for?

Could be. A proper inspection should show any potential issues. It can be checked for straightness and rust issues.

The body mounts will have to be relocted to fit post 64 C2s

                              Michael,

There is a serial # on the drivers side frame box section just forward of the # 4 mount (the mount behind the door) and also on the kick up by the rear #5 body mount.

Sometimes a picture tells it best. Here's the 2 different locations for the frame stamping on my early versus late '65s for the rearmost of the two frame stampings (in addition to the one forward, opposite the left cheek ).

Pink eraser is location on my early '65 (and I suspect '63's and '64s). The orange handle is where I found the stamping on my real late '65 (and I suspect '66s and '67s).
