Just for clarification, does your photo mean that there are two locations for the VIN on the frame, one on the top of the rail under the drivers seat (as you show), and one above the driver's side rear wheel kickup (as others show)

Or is it, that the location varies by year?

I'll have to take a look at your location on my 67. Thanks.
Jerry, I looked for the VIN on the kick up over the tire and couldn't see one. Maybe it's there but I didn't look too hard. I did get the one next to the driver's seat and that is what's shown in the picture above. PT

      Jerry -

On a '67, the rearmost VIN stamp is centered exactly on the front edge of the #4 body mount bracket.

Here's where it is on my extremely late '65. You can see the slot in the top side of the frame. My camera is about where the power antenna would be (gas tank removed). To the left is the fiberglass "cage" for the rear body mount.

On an early 65 would there be just one VIN stamp and that would be on the rear portion of the driver side rail as in the photo above (14 3/4 inches from the rail end cap) ?

Still two VIN stampings, even on early '65s (at least as of #01425 -- the last car produced before the strike in Sept '64) of which I have close-up pics of both locations when body was lifted.

April build 67 frame serial number stamped at 2 locations: under the driver door on the top frame surface, and on the rear frame, adjacent to the #4 mount.

Interesting. Most of the C-2 cars we restored had only the stamping on the kickup. Two with NO VIN in either location.

Can anyone tell me if they know of a method to bring the S/N on the frame back from being too rusted to make out? I am trying to verify that the frame on my 63 is original to the body, and the numbers on the frame are so rusted that it is almost impossible to read. Is there a chemical wash (I know the guys on TV on CSI could do this in a heart beat) that anyone knows of that will help show it?
                    Thanks,

I can't help with retrieving your old numbers but remember that the quality of the stamp varied greatly. I just pulled the body off my 65 and there is absolutely zero rust, in fact very little dirt, but the stamp is barely readable because it was stamped so lightly.

I had the same problem with my numbers and was told that the acid used for swimming pools will work for this. Haven't tried it yet though.

For what it's worth, I have been unable to see the stampings on my 67 despite looking many times and even wet sanding the fairly rust free frame to bare metal. I suppose they must be there, but I've had no luck. The frame is original to the car.

After reading about two stampings I went and checked my April 65 car. The one on the kick-up is very light and barely readable but there's one under where the drivers door would be and it's very clear.

Thanks very much for the feedback. I will be getting to the chassis in the next day or two, and will let you know how the advice above works out.

Going back to the original question, the VIN number is also stamped on the transmission, at least on '64s, of course assuming the transmission is original to the car. On the flange, driver's side rotated 90 degrees from horizontal.
