    Re: Acrylic Lacquer Brand

I think you may have to do some leg work and find a car that meets your liking that you can color match or start hitting up some of the old time painters and see if they have a panel or chips or even an old car part. Maybe you need to start looking on line for bits and pieces of cars with that color just to do a match from. In the end you will eventually have to give a thumbs up to something or live in primer, and frankly since you aren't working with the real paint from back then its all going to come down to someones best guess and your liking. Maybe there's a place on your own car under a carpet or jamb that is still accessible to do a match from?

John- I can't believe you know about the Vega paint. You worked there? Quite interesting. I spent 4 months on the Vega article on Wikapedia. My orange millionth Vega and all 40+ images I included in the article check it out. You gave me something cool to add to the Lordstown section of the article. I already mentioned the high rate of assembly (line speed) but this info is great!. anything else you could tell me about the Vega in reference to Lordstown would be greatly appreciated for the article. Were all 73 Vega colors Dispersion Lacquer at Lordstown? Was it a temporary formulation? The millionth vega bright orange color came out May 73. (Plate dated 1-22-73) You mean my original paint 73 "Millionth Vega" is Dispersion Lacquer??? Gez..There is so much interesting stuff about the Vega due to the "100 car per hour" line speed.

Robert the best way is to get some paint mixed up so you can spray test panels. If your going to use lacquer, single stage, or BC/CC you will be able to tell from the test panels what the best color match is.

Just to be sure I understand....
The formula offered by PPG for their code 976 lacquer wasn't tested? not accurate? Where does their current (1993) formula of this color come from? Hasn't the legwork or testing been done for the formula since they said there is no alternate and its "prime". They said its accurate. Why would the painter's testing be needed and more accurate than their updated 1993 formula?? I just don't get it....Is it the components of the formula that vary? or are there different formulas for the same color that need testing? On the test panels what would the painter be comparing them to? Confused!! This is complicated

              Robert,

Simplest way to say it Do you want it right or close enough. If close enough is good go for the 93 formula.

Understood...Just not sure of the process. seems confusing. How come Chevy color chip brochures (actual color chips) aren't considered if the dupont color plate is not available? too small?

Is the GM/Dupont Color Standard 6x4 inch paint plate the best source? The original paint car (not-faded) seems like a tough task. Seems like some things aren't explained (by paint distributors, paint manufacturers and most painters)

Modern chips are ink, not paint. As a rule chips are just an indicator of the color, not an accurate representation
