Re: What is the hardest to get part?
Try this one.
Hatch hinge covers for an '82 Collector. These are the covers that surround the hatch window hinges of the Collector Edition. The GM numbers are:
14038231 Cover, Hatch Window hng.
14038232 Cover, Hatch Window hng.
Listed in February '02 GM catalog not in the previous or latter dates.
I don't see how these could have been listed in a "February '02 GM catalog" for a couple of reasons:
1) The last catalog GM ever published for 1953-82 Corvettes was the December, 1983 catalog. While the catalog was available after that time, no updates were made. So, no discontinuations or supercessions would be shown;
2) The GM #14038231 and 14038232 covers were discontinued without supercession in, respectively, March and June, 1982. So, they are not even included in the above-reference, final 1953-82 catalog.
By the way, the date of discontinuation from SERVICE is prior to the time that the last 1982's were produced. So, these parts were unavailable in SERVICE prior to the time that some folks received their cars NEW.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Reuben------
Most parts that were unique to the 1982 Collector's Edition were discontinued a long time ago and are extremely difficult to locate. I have always believed that what likely occurred was that a single manufacturing run of these parts was done for both PRODUCTION and SERVICE requirements. Enough parts were allotted to PRODUCTION to allow St. Louis to complete the planned number of cars. The rest went to GMSPO for SERVICE and when they were gone, they were gone.
Given the fact that parts like these covers were discontinued even before the 1982 model year was over, it may even be that, due to more orders for 1982 Collector's Edition cars than anticipated or planned, some of the SERVICE parts inventory was pulled out for PRODUCTION.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Richard------
1969 alternators are VERY easy to find. However, the exception is 1969 Corvette alternators. Those are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to find. Not only are the part numbers unique to Corvette (which is actually a minor thing in my opinion) but the case configuration, front and rear, is unique to 1969 Corvette and an extremely small number of other applications.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

James------
It was not just used on Corvettes. It's applicable to most 1965 327 application in other Chevrolet cars. It's also applicable to 1966 passenger cars with 396 and manual transmission.
The GM #1116238 was discontinued from SERVICE in July, 1966 and replaced by the GM #1115357.
By the way, if you want your car to suffer incessant pre-ignition problems, make sure you use one of these two above-referenced vacuum controls.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
