    Re: Original documentation dating verification

    Kenneth,
to clarify a couple of points made in your comments.
First, you referred to "taking an ink sample". I don't what would be involved, but, it sounds like a scraping or a chemical inducement that may cause damage and/or give the document an appearance of being tampered with.
Secondly, yes, the technology is available to digitally enhance the text image from the "Dark" area surrounding it.
Thirdly, Al has done his homework to the benefit of us all.
For example, if someone purchased a used '67 Corvette within the two year warranty period, they could go to a dealer and have a second GM POP produced in their name. The fonts in these second POPs, produced by GM, do not even have the same characteristics as those of the production POPs that came with the car.
Fourthly, what the other guys said.
Fifthly, I think I just created a new word, but, wanted to remain consistent,
    Good Summation!
Steve, you are missing two the best shows on TV.
Pat, many reasons how your re-POP may have slipped through.
Since only the contents are judged, you may have recieved credit just because it is there. Judge may have identified it as a repop and given credit because it is not judged individually, or, the judges experience level with the originals.
    HaND guys

      Re: Original documentation dating verification

I'm pushing 70 real hard and, yes, I lived "Back in the Day". I don't mean to say you fellows aren't sincere and acurate in your observations, rather it's just a shame where we've evolved in this. Then too, we're not talking about Rembrandts here. They are just fun cars and it's a fun hobby. Also, business is business and it is prudent to know your stuff if you are going to lay down a big piece of change for any capital purchase. I hate the term "buyer beware", but really that's what it is.

I guess the difference to me is that when I bought my 63 new, I never thought of it as an investment and still don't to this day. Sure I saved most of the paper work because, as I said, I'm a pack rat. I'm glad and amazed that it has appreciated in value as, let's face it, how many things do you buy in a life time that do?

This is good info and I applaud you all.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. That's what I love about this site. There's a tremendeous amount of knowledge and experience that you just can't get anywhere else. Everyone has their own ideas about what this hobby is, and no one feels threatened when expressing those ideas, unlike some of the other boards out there. Joining NCRS was by far the best money I've spent in a long time. I am going to pursue this issue a little further and will post what I discover.

        Thanks,

          Re: Original documentation dating verification

Guys, we already have the power and knowledge base to move forward with purifying this hobby. This thread is similar to another thead from a couple weeks ago. One major step is to create a searchable database of all the judging results from NCRS & Bloomington Gold. This will certainly curb the activities of cars suddenly becoming more "original" or better "documented" than it was a few years ago. Would'nt you like to know that a car was missing the VIN on the trans or missing the POP last time it was judged 10 years ago? I'd love to take the initiative on a project like this. I predict this subject will someday become the secondary charter of this organization. Check this thread out...

            You could be correct.
On the other hand judges have personally told me, more than once, that some will look to compare the car's VIN number with that shown on the plate, and that some judges may even examine other info such as option codes. That sure seems like the plate itself is being "judged" to me. And if that's so, I'd think any deviation identifying it as a repo would've at least been noted.
