Al had it on display in his showroom before he sold it at the end of 2007 I believe at a RM auction. I'm not sure exactly, but I recall it had an early '65 VIN.

Wonder why the 65 has a 63 clutch fork? Bob

Good catch. I also noticed that the FI unit doesn't have the small rectangular block on the front of the plenum for the metered orifice that connects to the oil fill tube. A 63 wouldn't have that but 64-65 should have.

Can't see the small boss for the starting by-pass solenoid micro switch on the throttle lever that 64-65 would have but not 63.

The chrome clamp that holds the chrome tube at the front of the plenum looks like a clamp for a double tube like 63, not the small single clamp that would have been used for 64-65.

Strange that the KO wheels look like the unpainted 63-64 version.

Was this display restored, or do you guys think it is pretty much original, the way it was in 65 ??

The fuel injection is definitely not a 65 FI unit. Just a mock up built from parts for display. The plenum may in fact be an early 63 sand cast one. Or the company that built the display polished off the ledges were the ID tag would go. As you said Michael no boss for the restrictor fitting. One really weird part is the air cleaner adapter. Appears it is installed backwards. It has been massaged. Not just backwards but reworked to give a tunnel effect when you look into the side of the air meter. Notice the tube staring at you when you look at the adapter. Yes the cone has been modified for effect. Only two screws holding the cone on also. Should be phillips heads. See 5th edition. JD

Took this picture at Bloomington in 2000. Would be nice to see this display wind up in the NCM someday.

Do you guys think the 65 display is a revamped version of the 63 display in my original post, or are these two seperate displays ?

Re: 63 Cutaway Car In Lamars Iowa In 63

Tom, I always thought it was a new display. However as John, John, Micheal and Bob have pointed out it has a lot of 1963 parts on it. I now think the original 1963 display was rebuilt to represent a 1965. This would have ben cheaper than building a complete new display and GM did not have any use for an expensive display representing a 2 year old car. Just my thoughts.

PS, Don thanks for the youtube link. Love watching that thing operate.

                        Don -

Sonny (Showdown Muscle Cars) didn't buy it - he was outbid by the guy sitting next to him at the R-M auction; don't remember the winning bidder's name offhand.

Thanks Don. I have followed the story and recently discovered the new owner. The car was in a collection in Africa for 30 years. A good friend just bought another 65 fuel injection coupe that was also in Africa. It is also Nassau Blue with blue interior. We have tracked the car back to the 2 nd owner, and are trying to find out if both of these cars went to the samer collector. The vin #'s are far apart thought. The cutaway was made in September 64 and the street car in April 65.

I thought I remeberd over hearing a conversation at Bloomington 10 years ago as I was looking at this display and the conversation stated that this was the 63 display updated with a 65 body. Is their a view of trailing arm shims or rear filler plug to see if thier 63 parts?
