    Media blast is just going to knock rust/dirt/etc off, so blast away! If springs are in that poor a condition (and yours don't look like that) you would not want to use them. I used a fine glass media blast for mine - nice surface for paint.

      I'm not sure that blasting will harm them. It just appears that there is some original scaling still present, which I thought might be interesting to keep.

        That divot you see on one end of the coil is likely from the manufacturing process. One end is fixed to a holder chuck with a sharp edge while the heated bar is rotated on the forming spool.

        Note left end of this coil spring.
