The problem is our old cars do not have a battery management system, and that is a recipe for disaster.

I'm sticking with the Standard deduction of an AC Delco battery. JMHO

I agree, at least for now. I have an AC Delco service replacement battery in the car now, and I also have a repro DC-12 with a dead AGM battery inside it. If I get to the point where 12 points deducted makes the difference between top and 2nd flight, that's when I'll spend the 300-400 bucks for transplant surgery on the DC-12. It makes more sense to fix a bad windshield washer pump (25 pts gained) with a $30 rebuild kit than it does to spend 10 times that much to pick up half the points on a more period-looking battery. Comes down to personal choice though. "Sense" may not always be the point. It's a hobby, after all.
