      Tim,

Beautiful 64! Had a 64 Daytona Blue Roadster with FI and KO's back in the 70's. Mine was in the 14,XXX numbers.. What is your number? You can PM it to me if you don't want to post it here.

      Thanks,

      Joe

My Dad was around this weekend, so I put him to work for a little bit. Shocking what he'll do from some free beer! We pulled the motor out so I can get cooking. Hard to believe he and I have been doing this for over 40 years.

Started busting the motor down today and getting ready for the machine shop. The bores measure out at .030 over and still appear to have a good cross hatch. Dummy me neglected to take a pic or two of the bores........

          yuck........

          Not surprised how this looks

This wouldn't bother me if it was on cylinder 6, not #8

          Nice original F.I. exhaust manifolds

Now, climb the mountain of parts to clean........

Re: 64 L84 Coupe shop find

I hope you measured deck clearance before you pulled the pistons so you can get started on the compression ratio management process. Consider the KB 157 hypereutectic piston that has a 0.5 cc net dome. They're considerably less expensive than the OE type forged replacement pistons, and if the decks aren't too high the CR should come in at around 10.5 with a thin head gasket.

It sounds like the cylinders maybe okay as is or just need a light hone. If the crank spun freely in the mains after the rods were removed and the bearings don't show any stress then the main bearing bore is straight and doesn't need to be align bored. The crank is likely straight too, but I recommend Magnaflux inspection and journal polishing. Don't let the machine shop remove any metal unless absolutely necessary.

The early 327 rods are boat anchors and a set of Eagle SIR5700 pressed pin rods are about 250 bucks a set and the cheapest rod failure insurance policy around.

LT-1 cam and VS-677 valve springs. Shim them to .090" coil bind clearance using the actual 1.44:1 full lift rocker ratio, and the valve train is good to 7200.

Massage the heads and the engine should make close to 300 SAE corrected RWHP at 6500 with a little rolloff to 7000 with noticeably more low end torque than with the OE 30-30 cam.

You'll end of with an FI version of the "327 LT-1" configuration that I developed and was thoroughly tested and vetted on the Corvette Forum back about 2006. Search for threads by "ghostrider20" and "Dave McDufford".

"Head massaging" is as I described in my "Tale of Two Camshafts" article.

Re: 64 L84 Coupe shop find

              Duke,

I did not pull the pistons and rods as I wanted the machine shop to pull and label things on their own. I pulled the pan to see if anything was amiss and pulled the heads to see what the bore size was / condition.

I do not have any experience / history with this particular engine. All looked good on the bottom end for what I took apart. When I spoke to the machine shop owner last week, he blurted out the LT-1 cam before I got it out......lol. He has some familiarity with the F.I. units and what they are looking for in terms of camshafts. Experience dictates the F.I. cars tolerate 10:1 compression on pump gas. The part of WI we moved to has 91 non ethanol all over the place and 100LL is readily available.

I'll dig up that article you referenced. I know I read it some time ago, but it is good to refresh. Thanks for the reminder about the rods. I plan to make certain this car runs HARD!

I sent the F.I. unit out to Ken Hansen last Thursday 1.7.21. I already received these 2 videos today. I'm glad I enlisted the help of a professional

Hard to beat a man at his own game. Ken clearly knows his business. Thanks for sharing! It’s amazing the information one can learn from the NCRS community.

Re: 64 L84 Coupe shop find

I've started to gut the dash in order to replace the insulation on the firewall and the wiring harness's. I'll also rebuild the wiper motor, radio, dash cluster. I cleaned up the original 4311 brake booster. That's getting sent out to Mike Gibbons for a mechanical refresh as well.

Certainly, the car did not sit in the most ideal of environments. I knew the windshield had been replaced for one reason or another. Looks like it was leaking, but the windshield frame is really solid

I'll rebuild the heater box today.......

I ordered a new gas tank, as I fear I will always fight this tank and what finds it's way into the F.I. unit. What isn't pictured is all of the rust pits

Tim, your coupe is looking great. I'd love to see the finished car someday.

I've been cranking away in the shop in the last few days........

One would think the retired parts gut could order the right u joints for the half shafts.........guess not. They turned out nice after the soak in Evaporust.

                          Heater box is rebuilt....

Strung the rear wiring harness and installed the new fuel tank....

Pulled the pedal carrier to rebuild that....

Packaged up the trans to ship it to Crash....

Body build number written under the old firewall insulation.....

I rest easier every time I install new wiring harness's. This thing was so brittle!
