Re: 1965 L78 Register
Gary-- I have had 2 396 Corvettes over the years.
One of them was vin#17261. It was a white coupe with maroon vinyl interior, a somewhat unusual combination. I sold it because its rust problems were beyond my capability to fix. I saw it a few years later at Carlisle. It was then maroon on the exterior too, and possibly had a bogus trim tag. The birdcage had been repaired and the frame replaced, but there were a number of mistakes that would make you doubt that it was a real 396, even though it really was.
The second one was vin#19583. It is a red convertible with black vinyl interior and an AO Smith body. My friend John Hinch of Davidsonville, MD owns it now and has just completed an excellent restoration.
I know of a few more 396's from rubbings I had taken from engine blocks, but there is no information about whether they were even coupes or convertibles. I will report them if there is any value to the survey.
