I think you can see the grain on the deck surface that was under the head. You can also see it continue slightly into the cleaned up area of the exposed pad, but the outermost part of the pad is too pitted and then scrubbed to retain the grain. A lot of blocks including most big blocks have pretty smooth grain to begin with.
There are broach marks there, but they're faint.
And, that's OK.

The marks in the first pic are clearer.
The broach marks on the pad of my original engine 63, VIN 3922 look a lot like those, i.e. very faint, almost invisible to the naked eye, but very clear when you shine a light along the edge of the block surface. Never had point deducted for the pad, through two Duntovs. Since VINs of this car and mine aren't that far apart, it makes sense that its 327 would have faint marks also... I'd say they're likely real...Mike
