A photo needs to be taken with the camera square to the deck surface for best results.

Jeff, I looked at the pad for a long time. Sorry, I don't see them. They are gone.

I think you can see the grain on the deck surface that was under the head. You can also see it continue slightly into the cleaned up area of the exposed pad, but the outermost part of the pad is too pitted and then scrubbed to retain the grain. A lot of blocks including most big blocks have pretty smooth grain to begin with.

If you hold an LED flashlight near the edge and shine it across the surface, what little grain that remains may show up...

Your first picture you posted was the clearest. I can see them, they are faint but they are there. The surface near the edge of the block is as someone described, too pittted from corrosion so they are gone in that area. I would use some navel jelly to coat that area of the pad. You may have to do this a few time to get it good a clean. Wipe it off and then take some brake cleaner and spray the area which will clean any residual navel jelly out of the depressions which make it cleaner and very dry without any lint deposit left from a rag or paper towel. Then take more pictures using lower light and an LED flash light shined across or parallel to the stamp pad surface to light up the pad when taking the pictures. A higher resolution camera would also help.

                  Regards,

                  James

I agree with Patrick. I have seen a lot of blocks / broach marks look like this. The transition between the head surface and the pad look very good to me.

Wasn't the broach marks on your block called at the Florida Regional this month?

Your pad looks good. Don’t do anything to it other than dab a bit of motor oil on it to retain what you have. Seriously.

If someone called this pad, that person should be judging Fords.

The original question was (are these broach marks?. The answer is still NO! Those are sanding scratches not broach marks!

Here is a 1963 engine or comparison that is up for sale on Hemmings Daily today.
