Re: 85 year old lady with awsome 64 coupe w/ strange stam pad

I have decided I will take a stab at this with respect to judging and it might be different than what has been presented.

Wrong casting number loss is 350 points.

Correct casting number, casting date after production of vehicle loss is 175

Correct casting number, casting date within NCRS guidelines, original broach marks something like 4 N0546 stamped on pad, point loss 50 points

if pad does not have correct broach marks I doubt seriously the purported replacement warranty whatever engine was supplied by GM.

later original CE supplied warranty engines all have real broach marks if they are truly warranty supplied.

Thanks to all again for your input and your knowledge. I received a call from the son of the lady last night and I will complete a forensic exam of the complete car and documents on Thursday of this week. A combination of inspection, photos and all of the documentation should open or close this case. I'm just glad for the chance to delve into the mystery. Ed B, after spending a short time with the owner she indicated to me that my endeavor of using mine and others knowledge to uncover the mystery of her ownership has her very excited, it doesn't take a lot if your 85 years old and a widow. This car was given to her at a young age by her husband as a gift. She is a pure delight to talk to. I plan on spending more time in her company to learn the whole story. Vinnie, I see a great story potential.

Keep in mind GM has always been averse to replacing an entire engine or paint a whole car under warranty.

Back in 1963, when I worked for a Chevy dealer, the factory rep came by once a month to inspect warranty claims.
He would use a slegehammer to put a hole in any bad block or heads. MANY short blocks were replaced.

The admission of NOT having the engine the car was born with is clearly stated. It could not be clearer. Why is this post continuing on?

"Gene Gene Dancin' Machine" the thread continues because inquiring minds want to know. Ed has in an indirect way asked if anyone can decode the 4N 0546 stamp on the warranty replacement engine. That's the technical end. He has given some enticing background which raises questions. That's technical too and very interesting human interest as well.

I don't think the current engine ever being original is in debate. The question is what is in it now and how does it correspond to the engine the car started life with and is it an approriate warranty replacement.

So Ed it has been some days now since your examination and as I have said "inquiring minds wanna know". What have you found in your inspection of the engine and documents?

Nice story Ed. Start with photos of trim and vin tag. You know the rest of what is needed. DARK, Daytona blue was the only 64 blue color interior. You could get blue-white, and blue- silver as well. 64's have a very extensive interior cololr and trim codes. The ''Authentication Library'' book covers in detail. I have it as well as most motor book for all GM engines. CASTING number and CASTING date will tell 90% of original source. Most pad numbers like you have stated that I have seen are internal manufacturing factory internal codes from Flint......or Tonawanda. Truck small blocks were made at Tonawanda.

                  Hi Roy,
Correct me if I'm wrong. But if casting number and casting date is wrong (NTFP) then it matters not what is on the pad including broach marks....... Everything is full deduct, No?

Been great fall weather here still driving Corvette. How about your area.

Re: 85 year old lady with awsome 64 coupe w/ strange stam pad

The mystery has been solved. I traveled to the garage of the son of the lady who owns the car. My first task was to look at the motor.
After having the owners son remove all of the radio suppression covers and the powerglide kickdown rods I found a block casting number from
a 327 truck, and a casting date in Feb 64. The info from Roy S. is right on. To my amazement the son said he was mistaken about the year.
The VIN #, trim plate, protectoplate and the current registration shows the car is a 1965. I talked to the owner and told her what I had found. She has decided not to go any further since the complete engine (short block) cannot pass NCRS judging standards. I examined the rest of the car, it is complete original car. 300 Hp, Powerglide, with every option Corvette offered in 1965. I feel bad for the lady but she understood the need for total originality. Vinnie, the story will never be told. I looked at three photos related to the ownership of this car. First is a beautiful, very young lady standing next to the front fender of a new 65, white, vette, this was her graduation gift for college. The second was a stunning 30 year lady standing next to the same fender, the last was a the same lady at 80 and just as beautiful. It is a shame, but for an advisor at the local Chevrolet Dealer (Glendale, Ca), this would be a great Bowtie candidate and one hell of a story. Oh by the way, everything worked on an Ops check.

That a great end to a great mystery Ed. I was suspicious right away it might be a truck engine, dealers were all alike in the day. But really Ed, do you have to look at the VIN and trim tag, etc. to be able to tell a '64 from a '65? .....................

Mike, I have lived in the dark ages too long. My 53/55 and 56/57 days may be at an end. Some days I have only one or two cars to judge
at a National meet, and I see the mid year guys have 40 0r 50 cars. Wait a minute, that means I have more time to visit and to smooz, I think
I will stay where I am. Maybe I should go to the 90/99 crowd that seems to be a growing thing. Decisions, decisions, decisions, I'll stay where
I am. I like smoozing, drinking and chasing good looking women, wait I may be too old for the latter. Oh well life goes on, see you at the next Regional or National, work, work, work.

OK Ed, next time we get together, which will be in Laughlin most likely, before we smooz, chase women, and drink whiskey, Don and I will take you over to my '64 and get you a remedial course in C2-ology. I have to admit the same lack of knowledge of cars before and after the C2s, so maybe I can get some remedial training from you on those!

This all sounds like a great Restorer article - call it True C2 Detective - or something like that. And..... the publicity from the article may help the lady get a higher price for the car when she is ready to part with it.
