    67 - Reverting to Under-car exhaust

    Hi:

As we are all aware the process of reverting a made-up side-pipe car to the correct under car exhaust requires collecting all of the requisite pieces to make the switch. Fair enough and relatively strategy forward. However, I have found several vendors who are selling a pair of parts called "rocker molding mount brackets". See the example photo below:

Apparently, the idea here is to rivet these to the front edge of the fiberglass fender tab. (The one that was removed when the side pipes were installed.) This one----

My question is this: Is this just someones idea of a way to remount the fender tabs or were these actually used at the factory.... I did not see anything in the AIM ('67). But I may have missed something ---

    Any ideas on this one?

    Thanks!!!
    Bill

A little confused. Metal parts were rivited on. Fiberglass piece in your 2nd picture was part of the 1/4 and fender

        Paul:

Yes the extension is cast on and a part of the fender---- when side pipes are added that tab gets cut off to clear the side pipes.....

I am getting ready to put the tab back on and this additional metal part is offered..... assuming it was factory installed it was riveted to the forward ridge of the tab and then attached to the bottom of the bird-cage with a bolt.....this was apparently done to strengthen that cast on tab....I am assuming all of this.

....and as I indicated the question was --- is this a factory part? Keith indicates yes ----- but as I mentioned I can't find it anywhere in the AIM which is a bit puzzling.

        Regards
        Bill

Bill, That bracket is riveted to the back face of the fiberglass fender extension. Your rocker molding front screw attaches to this metal bracket using the same plastic insert that snaps into the other rocker brackets. I hope this makes sense!! Joe

The metal part( in your picture) rivits to fiberglass piece, , you can put a screw threw the rocker molding at the bottom into a plastic clip that is in the metal piece in the picture .( same plastic clips that are in all the lower rocker brackets ) the brackets that are welded to the bird cage

              Thanks Joe:

So the square hole pictured at the bottom of the bracket is used to attach the rocker molding and the screw and nylon retainer holds it all together?

i.e. through the forward of the two holes in the photo.....

That makes better sense now ----

              Thanks!!!

Thanks Paul --- our posts crossed ---

This is a lot clearer now ---- should be pretty straight forward to get that all back together ---

                Thanks!!!

And the pop rivets that LIC sells to attach the metal dohicky are way too long.

Left front view. The rivets all covered in old hardened goop.

                        Thanks Don...

This really helps a lot --- I now see the correct placement of this part ---- I had it totally wrong in my mind!!!

                          HI:

First of all thanks to everyone who chipped in with information on this question....

Next: I did some digging on the net and then I recalled an article about "adding" side pipes to a mid-year. It was published by one of the vendors (for the obvious reason!!!). You may have seen it; the one with the yellow coupe? I dug up that article and sure enough I found a pretty clear shot of the part in question.....this shot and the one that Don H. provided pretty much tells the story. The only things that surprised me about this part is that it is much smaller than I thought and I have not been able to find any reference to it in the '67 AIM.

                            Bill,

What's interesting about the work done on the '66 in the Corvette Central side-pipe conversion is they just bent over the rocker panel hangers, so that presumably that could be un-bent if a future owner wanted to convert back to under-body exhaust. During judging I've seen one car that had the hangers cut off with an oxi torch. In either case the hangers or hanger ends would be visible doing judging, so not the best approach if one is trying to pass off the car as an original side pipe car.

Regarding the little metal doohicky (around 1.5" x 2" or so) that you point to in the CC photo, I replaced the ones on my '66 because the originals were badly rusted and pitted. The replacement was very easy using a pop rivet tool and the correct length pop rivets that can be found online from a sheet metal tool supply vendor.

                            Gary
