Re: Engine pad stamp
edit....a closer look may be that the hole is for a missing firewall insulation plug. Hard to see.

Re: Engine pad stamp
I see that the usage letters are also stamped lighter than the build date as if they were higher in the holder. This could also be why the one I posted looks like material has bee removed. Owner said the pad is flat. Also the holder my have been hit with the face cocked to the left. I owned a patternshop & have stamped a lot of cast iron. it's NOT very malleable &hard to stamp. Also the stamps get dull very fast because the iron is so hard.
Ken,
I wonder if the heavier stamps (FO701) in my engine suffix seen in my earlier post is because it was the first date of the new month (July 1965) and those stamp characters were relatively new and sharp. Your comment about the gang stamp being slightly cocked makes sense since the characters get progressively shallower in depth as seen from left to right.

When the line worker changed the stamps from FO630 do you suppose the changed the F & O? I wouldn't, but then I am lazy.Terry- Top

Re: Engine pad stamp
I have to wonder how many commenters are mechanics that have actually pulled heads for valve jobs or overhauled engines for a living. I suspect there are very few cars out there that have not had their heads removed from the block at some time. It was/is quite common for a mechanic to clean the block with a scraper and finish off with a sanding board with 80-120 grit paper. I did this myself on my 1969 L68 back in 1982 when I overhauled the engine, long before I had ever heard of NCRS. Now many are critical of my engine pad even though I have a matching tank sticker. I know the owners and the history of my car back to 1972 when it was purchased used with less that 9000 miles on it and there is no reason in my mind that this stamp is anything but original. If I had an NCRS mind set back in 1982 I would have been a lot more careful with my use of a sanding board, but that is all it is. I think a lot of the engine stamp detectives misunderstand how these blocks are handled during valve jobs or engine overhauls.

Re: Engine pad stamp
I have a question on how this would judge if the stamp pad was determined not to be original. Would it probably just lose the 38 points for the Stamp Pad Finish ?
If the stamp pad and VIN Derivative was perfect but the Assembly Stamping was off a letter (i.e. HC rather than HV), then would you lose the 38 points for the Stamp Pad Finish, 25 for the VIN Derivative and 25 for the Assembly Stamping ?- Top
