Re: Rear End lets go after only 300,000 miles !

Hi, I am dropping off my rear end on Sat. in CT......the #4 mount is the only bolt that looks like trouble. All the years of driving the car year round must have kept the bolts on the suspension from rusting, they all came out with just a little heat and soaking and a very long breaker bar with very slow turning.

        Rear end update

As you all know, this started out as a stuck plug on my tranny. Well the rear end blew and I got a chance to take the rear down to Gary Ramadei, in New Haven CT. He is one of the best re-builders in the country.

He did my steering box and now the rear.

Here are the photos of Gary at work doing a preliminary inspection of my rear. As you know, it was a mess after blowing up a few months ago.

The posi unit would not come out even with the side yokes removed. Gary will use a case spreader later in week to spread the side walls of case so that the bearings and posi can be removed. We tried with a pry bar but could only get it half way out.

I will have follow up photos as Gary sends them to me next week.

The end result will be a rear that will go from 3:70 back to the original 3:36 that the car was born with.

        The arrival

Proper mounting needed to work on rear

Cover is off and that look is not good !

Got them off after a bit of work

Needed a big hammer to get the side yokes to come out, usually they side right out but the case is a little twinkled

          Side yokes removed

              Re: Gary's reaction

Gary Ramadei has been working on my rear end. In my other post he is trying to remove the posi unit from the case but it will not come out because the case was spread and distorted by the explosion of the posi unit after 300,000 miles.

He took a torch to the posi to remove it , to see if the case would be usable to rebuild. It was not.....

Enjoy the pictures.....he will replace the whole rear end for me and then tune it.

Jack let me know if you need a Donor, I have a 370 ratio unit yours for the taking from a late 70's corvette. Don't forget if you go back to a 336 ratio the transmission drive gear will have to be replaced on the tail shaft. I should add the unit was a working unit I had installed on my 63

                            Hi Ed,

I do not have to go back to a 3:36 , if I can find a good donor. How late 70's , Gary had mentioned that some late 70's rears where no good. Let me talk to Gary, He is looking for a used one now for me.

I am interested if Gary says OK. I will get back to you as soon as I talk with him.

Jack this unit is a 78 I believe, also if you want I Have a 65 unit but needs gears and overhaul. The other unit is a working driving assy. and is quiet, the only thing I might do is install your mid year side yokes I believe they have harden tips.

This thread and, in particular the degree of damage to Jack's C2 diff has my attention. Is this degree of catastrophic internal damage typical or the exception to the norm? My '64 with 4::11 posi is making noise - is it at all safe to drive (just drive not abuse) or am I risking a major blow-out like Jack experienced? Granted I have far fewer miles than Jack, I have good reason to believe this original diff has less than 70K miles. Yes, I do plan to have the diff completely overhauled / rebuilt but I would like to drive it a bit before having the rear suspension dismantled for 3 months or more.
