      Re: 72 Tank Sticker

      Hi Patrick,
It's going to take a bit more than a set of keys for someone to take my car.
The groups of digits are just 'made up', and I thought the picture was too blurry to read the actual characters.
      Your thought is well taken!
      Regards,
      Alan

I actually have the key code blown up in some pictures and reversed so you can read it.
The key code is stamped in reverse on mine.

        Dr. Hulst,
If you quickly review the prior requests you will find that I did suggest sending a copy by PM. I am not researching the codes themselves, merely there presence on build sheets and when they began. And when they finished?

        However, your point is taken.

Kevin, My 71 VIN #21467 which was built on July 8, 1971 has the VIV in reverse and what may be a key code on it as well. The code in the build sheet is 4 letters/numbers followed by a "22". Not sure what that is.????

Kevin, My 71 VIN #16798 which is a may build does clearly have the VIN and key codes on the tank sheet so it appears the key codes started as early as May 1971.

Just so you know, they are not key codes to cars I still own. But thanks for the thought.

                Kevin,

Oh yes, I noted that. I was directing it to Alan and Monte, as well as anyone else who might want to post examples.
For those that didn't know, with key codes anyone could have keys made to your car and then be able to drive away with it.
Given that anyone's location and address is just keystrokes away in 2014 reality, it's best to be cautious with key info.

                  Patrick,
                  Your warning is appreciated.

Now, back to the original question. With the posts above (thanks all) I have learned these codes appear much earlier than I had heard or read.

I'm still very curious if the numbers were seen on every sheet or hit and miss? And again what pages were being typed on at the same time causing these numbers to go through the carbon paper?

I'm still searching for sheets in the 1972 model year, 2000 to 3000 vin range.

Another question came to mind. Have the reproduction (fake) sticker producers added these codes to their master pieces?

Reproduction tank sheets are better called "fakes". They take great pleasure in making their "fakes" look very much like originals Put nothing past those folks but likely they have not done research like you are currently doing but they likely will learn something from the above information. When they age and discolor them they are nor reproductions. There is lots of 'Fake" paper out there. Much more than most of us would ever believe.

                        Kevin,
It sounds like you are looking for the span where the key codes were on the build sheets. The codes I have were on a vin in the high 188XX range. I have a copy of another tank sticker that has the key code too. I copied it off the internet, but it was in the very low 18XXX range.
What is it you are exactly trying to figure out? The actual range of vin numbers the codes were on.
I have a number of friends with 72's that I can ask if it might help.

                          Hi Dave,
Are you suggesting, not to post Corvette related questions on the NCRS TDB? Information such as this is better a secret for the few?

Thanks for your replies. What I'm trying to make as close as possible a certainty that these codes were on every sheet. Not hit or miss and the beginning and end of this occurrence?

Sorry to carry on with the off topic on this thread, but

You guys are taking this tank sticker issue to seriously. If they get so good that I cannot tell the difference between a real one and a "reproduction" one, it is just like everything else.

I bought a 63 fuelie back in the early 80's. I paid more for the car, even back then, because it was a fuelie. Some of my friends laughed that I paid what I did for it. Now, there are more "original" 63 fuelies out there than were ever produced originally.

I can look at it two ways. Half the parts on our cars are reproduced, or reworked. All these new 63 fuelies really drops the price of my $11,000 fuelie I bought years ago.

It is just a car. It is just a hobby. Frankly, it is all just becoming a joke. I own my cars because I like them. If some guy fakes a tank sticker there is nothing I can do about it. So, I don't worry about it. I have my paperwork that is real. But it is not as good or as much as I can now buy.

The re-pop window sticker are still a joke. Some of the other stuff is pretty good. We are buying cars. That is all they are. So, like everything else in life, buyer beware. If your car is that pure, it will show it. Bla, bla, bla.

                              Just enjoy the cars.

                              M

And yes, I know the 63 did not have a tank sticker. But all my other car did.

Mike, I don't know for sure but I would doubt that they would try, although anything is possible. I think the issue of the key codes will help to validate tank sheets as its one more thing to check. This fake paper is all over the place. Also there are people who are studying original POP's and are getting very good at determining originals vs. reproductions.
